Campus Protocol Update: New SC-DHEC Updates
As Sherman College diligently monitors state and local COVID-19 guidelines, we are continuously adapting our procedures to follow suggested guideline revisions. Published in July, the SC-DHEC COVID-19 Guidance for Colleges and Universities stated the following under the Screening section, 2(a): Routine temperature screening of all persons entering campus buildings is not recommended at this time.
In accordance with this revised recommendation, the Executive Team approved the revision, and now temperature screenings in the Olsen and Scallon Buildings will be performed randomly throughout the day by Dr. Janice Higgins-Fordree and designated appointees. If you are chosen for a random temperature screening, you must comply. The revised guideline will be effective beginning Monday, August 10, 2020.
The Sherman College Health Center will continue using the previous established protocols.
The College continues to recommend all individuals to frequently wash their hands with soap and water and observe social distancing guidelines. As always, if you are sick, feel sick or think you may be sick, please do not come to campus. Please contact Dr. Janice Higgins-Fordree with any questions or concerns.

Campus Protocol Update: New CDC Guidelines
Per new CDC guidelines, Sherman College is making the following revisions to campus protocols:
- If an individual tests positive for COVID-19, they are only required to self-quarantine for 10 days after symptom onset, are fever free for 24 hours and have improvement of symptoms. Exceptions to this would be someone who is immunocompromised and may require a longer quarantine time.
- Due to the 14-day incubation period of COVID-19, if someone is exposed to COVID19, the individual is still required to self-quarantine 14 days to determine if they are infected and to keep from possibly spreading the virus. The 14 day self-quarantine would not apply if an individual is tested after exposure and receives a negative test result.
As before, if you think you are sick, feel sick or think there is a possibility of you becoming sick, please do not come to campus. If you have either of the above situations, please contact Dr. Janice Higgins-Fordree immediately; you may also contact her with any questions or concerns.

Health Center Procedural Updates for Interns
Based on the increasing needs of patients, the desires of interns, and the efficiency of the Health Center staff and case doctors, the following procedures went into effect on July 27:
Interns no longer need to make patient appointments 24 hours in advance.
HC-11 (the computer room) will be open to interns to work on patient files from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
- Appointments for a workstation are no longer necessary; socially distanced computers are on a first come first serve basis, so please be mindful of your fellow intern needs.
- If the need arises due to patient volume we will consider providing an overflow computer workstation space
- If you are not here to see patients, but only to work on patient files, you still need to have your temperature checked at the records room.
- During the lunch hour from 12-1 p.m., please go to the Scallon Hall Atrium for your temperature check.

CARES Act Student Emergency Grants to Students
On April 14, 2020, Sherman College of Chiropractic (the College) signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement required under Section 18004(e) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act” or the “Act”) to receive its allocation of funds distributed from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (“HEERF”). Section 18004(c) of the CARES Act requires institutions to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received from Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care).
Sherman College of Chiropractic’s total allocation under HEERF is $136,466, and the college elected to make its full allocation of $136,466 available to students as Emergency Financial Aid Grants rather than limiting these grants to the required 50 percent of the allocation ($68,233). As of July 27, 2020, the college had awarded $113,416.95 to 110 students for an average award of $1,031.06. The college’s Emergency Loan committee will continue to meet every two weeks to review applications received in the order in which they were received until funds are exhausted. The college has 377 students who are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Applications and accompanying documentation are reviewed by the college’s Emergency Loan Committee for award decisions. The committee will not award more than $2,000 to any one student for technology needs and will not award more than $465 to any one student for food unless there is documentation of extenuating circumstances that demonstrate an extraordinary need. Applications will continue to be considered until funding is exhausted or the 12-month award period has expired (4/13/2021).
- request another copy of the form
- submit completed forms and accompanying documentation
- submit any questions about the HEERF program or the College’s application process.
Sherman College is grateful to have this opportunity to support students during this global pandemic. We encourage students to apply and to follow guidelines provided to ensure a seamless process.
