Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council Newsletter: Issue #25-10

Welcome to the October 2025 edition of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council's (SONC) newsletter, the Ziff Flyer.

Message from the President

Howard M. Katchen

email: hkatchen@shermanoaksnc.org

As we move into the fall season, I want to take a moment to share some important updates from your Neighborhood Council. October is a busy month for Sherman Oaks. SONC remains committed to ensuring Sherman Oaks has a strong voice in helping shape city policies that affect our daily lives.

I encourage you to join us at our upcoming SONC Board and Community Meeting on Monday, October 20th. We’ll be hosting a special presentation from FilmLA, the organization that coordinates film permits in Los Angeles. Film production is a vital part of our city’s economy, but it also brings neighborhood impacts—from street closures to parking restrictions—and this presentation will give you the opportunity to learn more and ask questions. Assemblymember Nick Schultz will join us at our next meeting on Monday, November 10th and provide a Sacramento legislative update.

Looking ahead, Sunday, October 19th is the annual Sherman Oaks Street Fair. Stop by the SONC booth, we want to meet our stakeholders and hear from you. SONC will once again be part of the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks (VNSO) Park Fall Festival on Saturday, October 25th. As part of the festivities, we’ll be hosting an outdoor community movie night, screening Hotel Transylvania. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors for a fun pre-Halloween treat under the stars.

Your participation makes Sherman Oaks stronger, attend SONC board and committee meetings and join a committee where the work is done. Stay engaged, stay informed, and let’s continue building a vibrant, connected community together.

Government Affairs Committee

Lindsay Imber, Chair

email: lindsay.imber.sonc@gmail.com

Although the Government Affairs Committee brings forth no motions this month, we are keeping an eye on a new council file relative to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

CF 25-1181 pertains to reviewing potential expansion of helipads throughout the city during the games. The motion seeks to review potentially opening up city-owned helipads to support private, commercial, and emergency use.

SONC will continue reviewing this council file and potentially bring forth a motion at our next committee meeting for placement on the Council's November agenda.

We are dedicated to protecting our stakeholders, which relative to helicopters generally pertain to residents of Sherman Oaks, and we plan to review this proposal through the lens of community engagement and minimizing potential impact on residential neighborhoods.

Thank you for your continued interest in Sherman Oaks. Please stay safe and be kind to one another.

With Pride and Determination—

Lindsay

Please join us at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, October 16th at the Sherman Oaks Library.

The graduate students from Cal State Northridge’s Urban Studies and Planning Department invite you to take part in an exciting community forum as they present their research-in-progress and gather insights from residents for the Sherman Oaks Resiliency Plan.

This fall, the students are diving deep into data and analysis to build a comprehensive picture of Sherman Oaks today. Their work is focused on several important themes that directly impact our daily lives, including:

> Business vitality and the food environment

> Crime prevention and community safety

> Housing patterns and land use

> Access to community spaces and shade

> Environmental features and sustainability

> Traffic safety, streets, and transportation

> Neighborhood history and demographic trends

> Preparedness for natural disasters

> Social networks and community connections

Your input is essential. By sharing your lived experiences, observations, and priorities, you will help shape a study that reflects the real challenges and opportunities in Sherman Oaks.

In the spring, the students will bring their work together in a beautifully illustrated book capturing the story of Sherman Oaks—its strengths, challenges, and vision for a resilient future.

Be part of this collaborative effort. Come listen, share your perspective, and help shape the Sherman Oaks Resiliency Plan!

LADWP's Greenleaf/Beverly Mainline Replacement Project will install 9300 feet of 6-inch water pipe along sections of Dickens St, Benefit St, and Greenleaf St in Sherman Oaks. Construction will take place Monday - Friday from 8am-3:30pm, with at least one lane open for the duration of the project and all lanes reopened at the end of each work day. Residents will have full access to driveways, period intersection closures will happen at Van Nuys / Beverly Glen, and tow away/no parking signs will be posted. The project is expected to be complete in June 2026.

What is a Neighborhood Council?
The Neighborhood Council system enables meaningful civic participation for all Angelenos and serves as a voice for improving government responsiveness to local communities and their needs. We are an advisory body to the City of Los Angeles, comprised of stakeholder volunteers who are devoted to the mission of improving our communities.

Neighborhood Councils advise the Mayor, City Council and City Departments on the City budget and will give local residents greater say over the decisions that affect our lives. You can view a brief video explaining what Neighborhood Councils do and what it means to be a Neighborhood Council member here.
