Little DC2B Gets the Sherman College Experience
|
When chiropractic patient, mom and professional photographer Michelle Patton starting bringing her family for chiropractic care with Sherman College graduate Logan Rhodes, D.C., ’14, she expected good things, but now a huge potential looms ahead.
Her younger daughter, Abbie, 6, has fallen in love with chiropractic and with Dr. Rhodes, going so far as to tell her mom that “when I get older I am going to be helping Dr. Rhodes.” Helping her with what? “With what Dr. Rhodes does,” Abbie explained. “Helping people. When she can’t work, I will work for her and when she's there, I will work beside her.”
When Sherman College Ambassadors Stacey Rodsater and Chris Gehrke heard about young Abbie’s aspirations, they made time to give the first grader, who lives just outside Spartanburg in Pauline, SC, a tour of campus. Abbie loved the experience, and Sherman College looks forward to having her back on campus in the years to come!

Making Holidays Merry
in the Community
While a holiday gathering itself is a simple gesture of employee appreciation, Sherman College also uses this event as an opportunity to help local children and families in need. This year, the Holiday Committee partnered with the Upstate Family Resource Center to support the Christmas for Kids Toy Drive and with Safe Homes / Rape Crisis Coalition to support the Christmas Gift Store. Both programs allow clients the opportunity to be involved in the holiday gift selection process for their children. Safe Homes extends the opportunity for little ones to shop for their parents in a separate gift store. Employees assisted by attending the Sherman College holiday party and donating toys, gift cards, coats, household supplies and monetary donations.

Sherman Visits Friends, Alumni and Trustees
|
President Cordero had a busy round of travel recently, visiting college friends and trustees in four states in three days. Accompanied by the college’s Senior Director of Institutional Advancement Roger Sullivan, Dr. Cordero visited on day one in Florida with the renowned Irene Gold, D.C., with Jerry Tishman D.C., of Sherman’s pioneer class of 1976, and with Dexter DiMarco, D.C. ’85. Dr. Irene told stories of the early days at Sherman, creating a college out of thin air almost, and shared the launch of some traditions that continue even today.
Day two began in Boston with Trustee Ed Marram, Ph.D., at Babson College, and ended in Nashua, NH, over dinner with former Trustee Ron Lanzara, Sr., D.C., and Sherman sweethearts Ron Lanzara, Jr., D.C., ’94, Cindy Lanzara, D.C., ’94. Dr. Ron Sr. told of the licensure challenges of his day, and of getting elected to the New Hampshire legislature just to be on the front line of that fight; Drs. Ron Jr. and Cindy shared about their rapid response to Ground Zero right after 9/11, about living atop a barge on the Hudson, providing chiropractic care to search and rescue teams.
Day three was all about New Jersey, as the Sherman travelers visited in Paramus with Joseph Donofrio, Sr., D.C., who shared stories from his 20 years of Sherman College Board service (12 as chairman), then traveled northward to Branchville to visit Sherman Trustee Kim Stetzel, D.C., and Greg Stetzel, D.C., ’83, to discuss Sherman’s expansion plans.
Pictured, top, are Dr. Ron Lanzara Sr., Roger Sullivan, Dr. Edwin Cordero, Dr. Cindy Lanzara and Dr. Ron Lanzara Jr.; bottom left are Roger Sullivan, Dr. Irene Gold and Dr. Edwin Cordero; bottom right are Dr. Greg Stetzel, Trustee Dr. Kim Stetzel, Dr. Edwin Cordero and Roger Sullivan.

Ambassadors Recognized at Quarterly Dinner Celebration
|
The Sherman College student ambassadors and admissions staff attended their end-of-year holiday and quarterly dinner celebration December 8 at Renato’s Restaurant in downtown Spartanburg. The staff wanted to show their appreciation for and enjoy an evening with the ambassadors.
During the dinner, ambassadors participated in the annual “plate” awards, where each ambassador recognizes the strengths that each individual brings to the program. In addition, quarterly awards were presented to Aixa Santos for the Showcase Star award and Lauren Corvi for the Ambassador of the Quarter. Quarterly recognition also went to Joe Messina for his presentation to the staff and faculty to bring more awareness to the program, to Jimmy Craft for the behind-the scenes-assistance he gives to the program, and to Chris Marrone for his willingness to always lead campus visit tours.
Officer Awards for 2016 were presented to Letitia Clay and Lauren Corvi for their excellence in leading this program over the last year. A special honorary plaque was presented to graduating ambassador David Vazquez for his dedication to and completion of the ambassador program. Vazquez is among the first to complete the Ambassador program during his career at Sherman and the college thanks him for his efforts in helping develop the program.

Assistant Director of Research and Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences John F Hart D.C., M.H.S., had a philosophy-focused paper published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Chiropractic Humanities, as part of its “Chiropractic Identity” themed issue. The paper was titled, “Analysis and Adjustment of Vertebral Subluxation as a Separate and Distinct Identity for the Chiropractic Profession: A Commentary,” and the full article is freely available at: http://www.journalchirohumanities.com/article/S1556-3499(16)30005-5/fulltext.
Radiology Department Chair and Professor of Clinical Sciences Laura Greene-Orndorff, R.T., D.C., recently attended the Radiological Society of North America conference in Chicago. The conference theme was Beyond Imaging: Maximizing Radiology’s Role in Patient Care. The program invited radiologists to think “beyond imaging” and explore new ways to collaborate, from discovering unexpected learning opportunities to broadening participation in the larger medical community. She was featured on the leaderboard pictured above.
Dean of Clinic Operations and Outreach Kristy Shepherd, M.A., has been selected for the 2017 Class of the United Way of the Piedmont’s Nonprofit Fellows Program. This program is designed to educate community leaders on the critical role nonprofit organizations play in the community, as well as to equip participants with the skills necessary to serve as effective volunteer leaders and board members. The program takes 10-15 individuals on a six-month journey of community-minded enlightenment and skill building. Monthly sessions seek to engage participants in a lifetime of service. Shepherd says she particularly looks forward to sessions on education, community health and poverty, which will help strengthen connections between the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center and the Spartanburg community.

Invest in the Future of Chiropractic
|
by Senior Director Institutional Advancement Roger Sullivan
During the holiday season it is natural to reflect on what really matters: family and friends, of course, but also the causes and institutions that embody our wishes for a better world. We hope Sherman College is among yours. We would be honored by a year-end gift, and we can promise putting it to good use.
Your support of Sherman is an investment in the future of chiropractic. And it is not just about money.
- Spread the word that Sherman – and chiropractic are “on the move.”
- Encourage the best and brightest to apply for admission to Sherman, and to a worthy profession.
- And of course, contribute generously as a way of celebrating your own success!
Let this be that milestone year when you “pay forward” from your own good fortune and hard work to help a talented new generation of chiropractors. Your donation will allow the college to continue attracting distinguished faculty like Christopher Kent, D.C., J.D., and Armand Rossi, D.C.
Sherman’s continued growth and success is made possible by strong and steady support from individuals like you across the globe who recognize the positive impact Sherman has on the profession. In this season of giving, we ask you to make a generous donation before the end of the year.
