Shark Tank’s Harrington Inspires Entrepreneurs at Sherman College

Renowned businessman Kevin Harrington addressed the Sherman College campus and special guests in the Gelardi Student Center at Sherman College on November 22, providing strategies for entrepreneurs. He offered real-world examples of positioning yourself as a person of influence, standing out in the marketplace and disrupting industry.

Harrington has been a successful entrepreneur for more than 40 years. An original “Shark” on the Emmy-winning TV show, Shark Tank, he is also the inventor of the infomercial, pioneer of As Seen On TV,” co-founder of the Electronic Retailers Association (ERA) and co-founding board member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO).

Harrington’s business relationship with Doctor of Chiropractic and Sherman College supporter Stan Pierce Jr., D.C., B.C.A.O., of the EPIC health care system, led to his interest in addressing future entrepreneurs at the college. During the program, Harrington spoke for about 40 minutes and Pierce for about 20 minutes, with a 15-minute question-and-answer session. Harrington remained on the Sherman College campus for a private luncheon and took time to speak with student leaders. You can watch the event recording (the program starts around 16:00) on our Facebook page, as well as see photos from the event .
College Employees Donate 40 Bags to Overflow Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Sherman College employees were eager to help families in need have a happier holiday weekend by filling bags of groceries in partnership with the United Way of the Piedmont, The Bridge at Green Street and TOTAL Ministries.

Spartanburg’s Overflow Thanksgiving initiative provides boxes of nonperishable items to families to help them prepare a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. The filled tote bags also come with extra supplies to help feed children over the long holiday weekend. College employees pulled together and filled 40 large tote bags to support this year’s Overflow Thanksgiving effort. Bags included basic Thanksgiving staples as well as pantry extras like cereal and peanut butter.

Kristy Shepherd, the college’s United Way campaign representative, coordinated the collection effort on campus. “Service is part of the nature of chiropractic, and helping others is a passion of ours,” she said. “Our employees are grateful for the opportunity to help our neighbors and our community with this program.”
ACP Programs Kick Off
in U.S. and Europe

Thanks to the program’s popularity across the globe, Sherman College’s Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) is launching two new classes – one in the U.S. and another in Europe.

The ACP is a one-year course designed to enhance the understanding, depth, and breadth of chiropractic philosophy. Sessions challenge the thinking process and the application of philosophy in the chiropractic profession.

Successful completion of the 100-hour program leads to membership in the prestigious Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers, and the ICA Council on Philosophical Chiropractic Standards accepts the successful completion of the ACP for 100 hours toward its Diplomate in Philosophical Chiropractic Standards.

Domestic modules will be held on the Sherman College campus, while sessions for the Europe class will be held in various locations across the continent. Registration for the Europe class is still open to a limited number of participants. Schedules and details for each program are posted at www.sherman.edu/acp.
#GivingTuesday Makes a Global Impact

We’re sure you know about Black Friday. We’re pretty confident that you’re familiar with Cyber Monday, and maybe even Small Business Saturday, too. But are you aware of #GivingTuesday?

Started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York City, #GivingTuesday is a response to combat the increased consumerism surrounding the holiday season by establishing an international day of charitable giving each year. It is based on a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. That idea has since grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. From a total of just over $10 million raised in 2012, to more than $400 million dollars given in 2018, #GivingTuesday provides individuals with the ability to collectively make a profound difference through philanthropy.

In 2019, #GivingTuesday will be held on December 3. In keeping with the spirit of the movement, Sherman College is dedicating the day to garner support for the Dr. John H. Porter, Jr. Scholarship Fund. If you would like to honor Dr. Porter’s example of selfless giving while also directly impacting the life of one of our future chiropractors, please join us in making a contribution on December 3.

Donations may be made online at www.sherman.edu/porter, or by contacting Rob Welborn at 800-849-8771, ext. 321, or [email protected]. Thank you for giving!
