PRide Day is October 27, but our Sherman Pride is Timeless
|
Fast becoming a favorite college tradition, the sixth annual Sherman PRide Day is slated for October 27, 2016. On this day, we ask alumni and friends to celebrate their affiliation with Sherman by sharing positive information about the college in their offices or on social media. It’s easy to participate on Sherman PRide Day, no matter where you are. Here are some ways you can join in:
- Wear a Sherman College shirt
- Shout out on social media with photos (grab some here!) or a status update regarding Sherman College (make sure to use #ShermanPrideDay)
- Post a link to the Sherman website
- Host a chiropractic career session
- Talk about Sherman to family, friends and patients…just work it into your conversations
- Change profile photo to something Sherman-related (choose one of Larry's special looks that reminds you of your time at Sherman)
- Invite a potential student to shadow you at work
- Refer a student to Sherman

Sherman Students Challenge Alumni in Pride Cup Competition
|
Who’s the proudest? We’ll soon find out when the Sherman College student body goes head-to-head with Sherman alumni in a friendly text-to-give competition in conjunction with the college's annual Sherman Pride Day. Here are the details:
- The winner is determined by the percentage of participation
(alumni vs. students)
- All proceeds create Sherman Pride Award Scholarships ($500 each)
to be given by the Alumni Association to Sherman students in 2017
- Alumni, text the word ALUMNI to 20222
Students text the word STUDENTS to 20222
- Your donation is $10 per text, which will be charged through your mobile carrier on your cell phone bill
The competition starts now and runs through the end of October with an expected surge on Sherman Pride Day, October 27.

Health Center Introduces
Chiropractic to 100 First Graders
The Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center was thrilled to welcome 100 of its littlest neighbors from Hendrix Elementary (about a mile away from the college) on September 30. Eight interns volunteered on their day off to introduce these children to chiropractic, the nervous system and health during a field trip focused on “community helpers.” Watch the video here, and visit our HC Facebook page to see more photos.

Interns have been active in the local community, including a resurgence of weekly health talks held on the college’s Chiropractic Health Center on campus. During the past few months, the Health Center participated in the following programs and events:

Nearly 100 Attend Sherman College's 13th Annual IRAPS
|
Eager to hear and present the latest in chiropractic research and philosophy, nearly 100 individuals came to Spartanburg, SC, to participate in Sherman College's 13th annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS) October 8-9, 2016 held at the Spartanburg Marriott. Keynote speakers included Dr. Matthew Hudson, Ph.D., MPH of Greenville Health Systems and Eric Russell, D.C., DPhCS, who discussed how subluxation is essential to the patient-based care model. Other presenters included Drs. Mitzi Schwartzbauer, Andrew Coyne, Christie Kwon, Matthew McCoy, Bill Decken, Christopher Kent, Tate Gentile and Charles Woodfield. The college wishes to thank ChiroFutures and the Upper Cervical Research Foundation for sponsoring for the event.

HACU Annual Conference
Fifth quarter Sherman College student Andretti Montalvo and Bilingual Admission Counselor Ivelisse Lopez met with Jo An Santiago, Director of Member Services for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), at the Annual Conference this week in San Antonio. They learned about ways to help Hispanic students at Sherman College be successful and also explored grant opportunities available.

Showcase Sherman Weekend
Sherman College is gearing up with 2017 events. Showcase Sherman Weekend dates have been announced and are as follows: January 27-28, May 5-6, July 28-29, and October 27-28. This event is for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Student Ambassadors Honored at Quarterly Dinner
|
Sherman College student ambassadors celebrated another quarterly dinner and enjoyed the camaraderie, bowling and pizza that Paradise Lanes in Spartanburg offered. The program welcomed new ambassadors Jennifer Sotomayor, Russell Goff, Aixa Santos, and Christian Ortiz with introductions and a cake. Officers Letitia Clay and Lauren Corvi led the meeting portion of the agenda and recognized the ambassadors who were participating in the intern pinning ceremony: Chris Marrone, Lauren Corvi and Jimmy Craft. Program Coordinator Emily Wood discussed upcoming events and announced quarterly awards. Lauren Corvi was the recipient of the Sherman Showcase Star Award. Letitia Clay won the Officer of the Quarter, and Chris Marrone received Ambassador of the Quarter. Sherman College is proud of all its ambassadors and thanks them for their commitments to the college.

Clinic Challenge Experience
The Clinic Challenge Experience (CCX) was designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice. On the ropes course on Sherman’s campus, facilitators and teammates encourage participants to face and overcome whatever fears are blocking their ability to accomplish tasks. View event photos here.

Intern Pinning Ceremony
Thirty-eight interns celebrated the entrance of the final phase of their chiropractic education on October 7 during a pinning ceremony at Sherman College. Because the clinic is open to the public, residents in Upstate South Carolina experience excellent chiropractic care at affordable prices through 30,000 patient visits per year. During the ceremony, interns recited the Pledge of Professionalism, and nametags were placed onto their blue clinic jackets. View event photos here.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month
|
The Health Center faculty recognizes interns each month who excel in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism and analytical and adjusting technique. The September 2016 Intern of the Month is Neal Quinn of Spartanburg, SC. He graduates in March 2017 and plans to practice in Spartanburg.

Sherman College Employees at the Forefront
Sherman faculty members Bill Decken, D.C., LCP, DPhCS, and Rick Brescia, D.C., ACP, DPhCS, were awarded Diplomate status in chiropractic philosophy after completing three years of study. The graduation ceremony was held in conjunction with the Adaptability Symposium.
Christopher Kent, D.C., J.D., Director of Evidence-Informed Curriculum and Practice, presented a paper, “Adaptability, Salutogenesis, and Epigenetics in Chiropractic” at the Adaptability Symposium in Chicago. The symposium was held September 30 through October 2, 2016, and attracted attendees from around the world.

Student Competes in Weightlifting National University Championships
Sherman College student Danielle Stetzel competed in the 2016 USA Weightlifting National University and Under 25 Championships in late September. She placed third in her category, lifting 76 kg (167 lbs) snatch and 89 kg (196 lbs) in clean and jerk, with personal records for each lift and for overall total. She is pictured above with her father, Greg Stetzel, D.C., ’83.
