Spotlight: Our History

Real Inclusion Lives Here

Why does real inclusion live here? Because of the courage and determination of our community.

But the work is not done.

For Community Living Month, we shine a spotlight on Developmental Services close to home and why everyone needs to champion real inclusion in our communities.

Learn why all of us must build on the past to inspire possibilities for people with developmental disabilities and families now and into the future.

Caroline's Cart Rolls into Walmart Huntsville!

Walmart Huntsville has officially rolled out a Caroline’s Cart for its shoppers!

“We are excited to have the cart available for our customers,” says Angie Dean, Assistant Manager of Consumables for Walmart Huntsville. “It was used for the first time by a family who has an older child with a disability.”

A Caroline’s Cart is a modified shopping cart that features a full-sized, caregiver-facing seat, an extra set of wheels for easy maneuverability, and plenty of space for products.

The cart creates a more disability-inclusive shopping experience for older children, adults, and older adults with disabilities, and their families, caregivers, or support workers, so they can easily shop together using the cart.

Thank you to the team at Walmart Huntsville for supporting disability inclusion.

Thank you to the families who continue to advocate for these carts in our community.

Thank you to the Children and Youth Services team at Community Living Huntsville for reaching out to area business owners to increase disability inclusion for people and families.

A Caroline’s Cart is as much about physical accessibility as it is about the dignity of social and community inclusion.

Happy Community Living Month!

Huntsville Shines for Disability Inclusion in May!

Thanks, Huntsville, for lighting up the night for Community Living Month!

On May 1, our team at Community Living Huntsville, the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, the Town of Huntsville, and the Downtown Huntsville BIA kicked off Community Living Month in vibrant colour with "Shine a Light on Community Living."

The provincewide campaign creates nighttime lighting displays in signature Community Living blue and green. In Huntsville, our administrative offices were lit up, as were Huntsville Civic Square and Kent Park. We are proud to have Huntsville participate!

Together, we are shining a light on the importance of disability inclusion. Our communities are stronger when everyone – whether with or without an intellectual or developmental disability – has the opportunity to belong.

So, how will you help in creating a community of belonging in North Muskoka? We are better together.

Flag Flies for Inclusion and Belonging

We cheered on May 5 as the Town of Huntsville proudly raised the Community Living flag at town hall – a powerful symbol of dignity, rights, and real community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities.

“Thank you to Community Living for all you do for our community,” said Dan Armour, Deputy Mayor, Town of Huntsville. “Thank you for (promoting) diversity and the inclusion of everyone.”

“Community Living Huntsville is seen as a leader in our sector,” said Jo-Anne Demick, Director of Community Relations and Collaborations, Community Living Ontario. “I would like to thank everyone for the great work you do in creating a community of belonging together, and promoting and advancing real choice and real inclusion.”

“Raising our flag is a symbol of your ongoing commitment to creating a community of disability-inclusion and belonging. Thank you. And yet, times are tough,” said Suzanne Willett, Executive Director, Community Living Huntsville. “By pushing for real change to build a stronger community, we can reduce wait times and improve quality of life for everyone – together.”

Across Ontario, more than 52,000 people are currently waiting for support services, including 28,000 who are waiting for housing-related support and 42,000 who are waiting for community support services.

Every flag raising is a celebration of the progress our communities have made in building places where everyone has the opportunity to belong. It is also a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. Real inclusion means working collaboratively to eliminate barriers, grow understanding, and ensure that every person can live, work, and thrive with the support they need and deserve.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today! Special thanks to the Town of Huntsville, Huntsville Town Council, our Board of Directors, our employees, and the disability-inclusion advocates in our community who made the day possible.

Donate to Transitional Housing

For years, the housing crisis in Muskoka has disproportionately affected marginalized community members, including people who live with the label of developmental disability. Homelessness is a real threat – and a stark reality – for many.

That is why our team at Community Living Huntsville launched our Transitional Housing initiative. The initiative has changed lives, and aims to change more, but relies on fundraised dollars, donations, and charitable grants to continue.
