Uniting for Flood Relief in Southwest Virginia

and Eastern Kentucky

“There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body…. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy. You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it.”

- 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Appalachian Alliance Led Effort

Last month, portions of our Diocese and a large portion of eastern Kentucky saw catastrophic flooding that left a path of death and destruction. Since our Appalachian Alliance churches were spared from the flooding, a disaster relief response was quickly organized out of All Saint Episcopal Church in Norton, Virginia.

Under the leadership of The Rev. John Church, a diocesan-wide effort ensued to quickly address the immediate need of clothing. Churches in the Lynchburg and Roanoke Convocations sent car loads of clothing items that were sorted and distributed by many in the Abingdon Convocation. Winter clothes have been stored for distribution when cold weather arises.

When the call came for cleaning supplies and diapers, churches throughout the Diocese answered, sending boxes with these essentials.

Finally, the diocesan monetary response has been overwhelming. Churches and individuals have given generously to both the Outreach Fund at Grace House on the Mountain as well as the The Rev. John Church's Discretionary Fund. These funds will not only provide relief in emergencies, but will also be used in the coming months to address ongoing needs.

Emmanuel, Bristol

The members of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Bristol, Virginia also undertook a major flood relief effort primarily in Eastern Kentucky. As a recipient of a large donation earmarked for flood relief, this lay-led effort paid freight costs to deliver food, purchased propane powered cooking appliances, and delivered car loads of supplies. The work in Bristol will continue “as long as there is a need,” according to The Rev. Dr. Tom Day, Interim Rector.

A quote often attributed to St. Francis reminds us to “speak the Gospel always and when necessary, use words.” Our Diocese quickly rallied to meet the greatest needs during a time of suffering and unimaginable loss; stretching out our hands in love to become the embodiment of Christ to our neighbors.

We will continue to hold those affected in our prayers and look for ways to live out our calling as Christians.
