Being the Light
Do you remember the first Christmas during the pandemic?
December 2020. A season marked by so much loss of life, tragedy, and collective trauma. People were afraid to look at one another in public. Masks covered mouths that no longer smiled or spoke kind words. It felt as though even simple interaction carried risk—as if connection itself could spread the virus.
And yet, I also remember something beautiful.
Weeks before the holiday season officially began, people started stringing Christmas lights and Hanukkah lights on houses, trees, and bushes. They stayed lit well into January. It felt like a quiet, collective response—a way to bring cheer and hope into a very dark night of the soul.
Little by little, people began to respond again: to a kind word, a gentle gesture, the light in someone’s eyes shining, as they smiled, in spite of their masks.
Holiday lights have always reminded me of the hope of better times and better ways of being. We can do better. We can be better.
Let’s see ourselves as those holiday lights—different colors, shapes, and sizes—each of us lighting the darkness in our own way. Let’s find the light within ourselves and share it with others.
Shining your light can be for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
Let’s shine for all three.
Happy Holidays.
Peace, joy, love, and light to you and yours.
Blessings,
Dawn
