Is Martin Buber's I and Thou a Jewish Book?
Martin Buber was one of the most significant Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. However, many readers have wondered about the connection between his best-selling work of existential philosophy, I and Thou (1923), and his Jewish commitments. In this talk, Dr. Brody will draw out the hidden connections between I and Thou and Buber's unique way of being Jewish.
Samuel Hayim Brody is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies and the Program in Jewish Studies at the University of Kansas. He is the author of Martin Buber's Theopolitics (2018), which won the Jordan Schnitzer Book Award from the Association of Jewish Studies. He is also the co-editor, with Julie E. Cooper, of The King is in the Field: Essays in Modern Jewish Political Thought (2023).
