From the Rabbi's Desk
Reflecting back on the last few weeks, I am awed by the support and profound love that this community has demonstrated to one another, to the Jewish mission, and personally -- to me and my family. The celebration at VINS was magnificent. It was a demonstration of our community’s energy and commitment. I am grateful beyond words for what each of you bring to our community.
This is the time of year that we begin to prepare for the High Holidays, the days of Awe. Elul is the month preceding the days of Awe and the time that we, as serious Jews, begin to prepare ourselves to come before the divine on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This year, the first day of Elul is August 28th. We delve into personal accounting, our Cheshbon HaNefesh, and consider: Who have we been over the past year? Who do we intend to be as we move forward? What work do we need to do to bring us to wholeness? Who do we need to forgive and to whom must we ask for forgiveness? How can we be compassionate and generous to ourselves and to others? How can we access the divine in our daily lives?"
Some of this work has already begun for me, as I spent my summer vacation in Cape Cod. I had the incredible blessing of being with my parents, my husband and children, and my brother and his family. It was an opportunity to stop, to breathe, and to hear the waves crashing on the shore -- a chance to think and to reflect. In the last few weeks, my mentor lost her husband, and four new babies were born into the congregation. The circle of life, l’dor v’dor, was so vivid. Watching the sun both set and rise reminded me of the eternality and wonder of the divine.
The community continues to work tirelessly to bring a family from the Ukraine to the Upper Valley. We will know more in the next few weeks. Having the honor of participating in this work, of sharing in the mitzvah, is deeply sustaining. There is much to be done and if you can help, please reach out.
These weeks leading up to Yom Tov are deeply sacred. We must always be conscious of who we are, but during this time, through study, through prayer, through acts of loving kindness, we have the potential to transform and renew ourselves and our worlds. Torah, Avodah, and Gimult's Chasadim, are the three pillars upon which the world stands. Please share in this work: come learn, come pray, come work in repairing the world….listen to the breeze hitting the trees and breathe….
Join us, and may you find a path, an entrée, a way toward shalom.
With love from our home to yours,
Rabbi Ilene Harkavy Haigh

“Summer days drifting away, To, oh, oh, the summer nights.” Summer in Vermont begins for us with our annual fund raiser gala and ends with our annual meeting and barbecue. Two delightful times for us to be together. This year we celebrated Rabbi Haigh’s 10th year with Shir Shalom at an amazing Gala at VINS. By every measure possible, it was our most successful Summer Fund Raiser. We raised more money, more people attended, more sponsors made donations, more auction items were sold and we had the most generous Wish List donations. But most important, we had so much fun together. There were a lot of people who made this happen and the testament to their hard work was how many people raved about the event. We are so grateful to the Two Sues (Sue Brown and Susan Feinberg) for their leadership: to Shari Borzekowski and the chorus; to Julie Sher and her “crew”, to Natalie Salmore for flowers), Leone for tables, and Paula Dorr for decorations; to Jen Anderson and Norm Frates for our auctions; to Jeff Kahn, Linda Werner and Susan Neuberg for sponsors; to Roni Skerker for invitations; and to the 40 more volunteers who made this event possible. Thank you all and thanks to all our generous members and friends.
On Sunday, August 21st at 4 PM, following a fun filled weekend at Silver Lake, we will have our annual meeting at the Temple, in person and on zoom, followed by a fabulous barbecue. We have an amazing slate of new Board Directors to be approved and our Executive Team continues for another year. This past year has been so exciting for the synagogue and so much has happened. We will be reporting on our programs, our finances, and our school, and our Rabbi will be inspiring us with her recap of Jewish life at Shir Shalom. Please bring a side or a dessert for the Barbecue along with your good spirit and good cheer. In addition, this year we are offering a few surprises. Come prepared to have fun, to meet some members you may have already known and some who will be new to you but we are sure you will gladly get to know. It’s a time of reflection and we hope you will offer your thoughts on how Shir Shalom Vermont best serves our community.
Shalom,
Phyllis Forbes

From the Education Corner
My childhood memories of the High Holidays remain limited to itchy wool-cabled tights, ill-fitting wrap-around tartan skirts, and inflexibly tight Bust Brown cordovan shoes that one only hoped would break in by Pesach. Children’s programming meant that my father would not scold me for tying the cords together on his tallis during the morning service and that during the Rabbi’s sermon, I could join my friends and hide under the fabric curtains of the sinks in the Ladies Lounge. There, we shared our angst at missing our morning dose of Looney Tunes. In short: the holidays were certainly memorable – but for all the wrong reasons.
Luckily, the Jewish world has shifted its views on children’s programming, and I am beyond fortunate to play a role in helping to make the joy of the high holidays come alive for our youngest Jewish friends. Shir Shalom has planned incredible Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah programs that place kids’ needs and wants foremost, allowing for joyful, hands-on, age appropriate experiences that allow children to learn about the holidays by: singing, creating, dancing, and playing.
Join us at 10:30 a.m. under the tent on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning with your children to build Joyfully Jewish memories. We will pray and play together and then join the entire congregation at the beginning of the Torah Service for the Hakafah (Torah procession). Come back on Yom Kippur for the Neilah service to hear the call of the Shofar which heralds the end of Yom Kippur, and the beginning of a healthy and sweet New Year.
I promise that your children won’t want to hide under the sinks out of boredom, but I most certainly CAN promise that they are not going to want to leave Shir Shalom. I can’t wait to create magical high holiday memories with your children. Here’s to a beautiful New Year, and may we all be inscribed in The Book of Life.
L’shalom,
Leah Gawel
