MARCH 2, 2015 - In the days when designer and new boutique owner Kay Charbonnet was traipsing up and down Magazine Street in her Sacred Heart jumper, fashion was always her thing. "Back then, though, the street was just peppered with shops: some a little edgier -- and not just in lower Magazine -- and others really committed to the classic Deep South tea-party thing. Today, fashion has really opened up. ... I think people want to be challenged. They want to feel cosmopolitan and urban, too."
Charbonnet has traveled a long way to come home again. "When I left New Orleans to study design in school and then hone my work in Paris and London, it not only prepared me as a craftsperson, but it opened my eyes as an artist and explorer. Coming home has been great, and being able to both refine my aesthetic and bring that look and feel, (adding) something different to Magazine, back home, has been tremendous."
Here's more of what Charbonnet has to say:
Q: What's the aesthetic of Kay's?
A: The most important thing about my shop is its sense of play and adventure -- from the clothes, to the gold hangers, to the music. Aesthetically, I would say you are going to find a lot of street style, some cool but edgier boho, and definitely more edgy rocker stuff. So, whether you see yourself as a Stevie Knicks or a Rita Ora fashion-wise, I can take care of you. My motto is "Don't Hate."
Women spend a lot of time bashing themselves and each other. They think they can't "pull something off." At Kay's, we want you to explore, have fun. Do the street-style thing.
Love the girl who confidently rocks the bellbottoms and the cropped graphic tank -- she's fierce. But so are you. Just try it..."
