Native American Cultural Day at Massasoit Community College

November is Native American Heritage Month! At Massasoit Community College, the community recognized the Native American Cultural Awareness Day by hosting a drum circle and an info session on Native American culture.

Massasoit Community College is named after Ousemequin Massasoit who was a 17th century Wampanoag leader in the region that is now part of southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island. Massasoit made political and personal ties with several British colonial leaders such as William Bradford. Based on English records, Massasoit had helped pilgrims in the Plymouth Colony, saving them from starvation, during their difficulties in the early years of settlement.

Historical Tidbit:

Macy's
Macy's was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy, who between 1843 and 1855 opened four retail dry goods stores, including the original Macy's store in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts, established in 1851 to serve the mill industry employees of the area. They all failed, but he learned from his mistakes.

Macy moved to New York City in 1858 and established a new store named "R. H. Macy & Co." on Sixth Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets. On the company's first day of business on October 28, 1858 sales totaled $11.08, equal to $312.83 today.

As the United States prospered during the Roaring Twenties, so did New York City’s iconic department store—Macy’s. After going public in 1922, R. H. Macy & Co. started to acquire competitors.Macy’s flagship store in Manhattan’s Herald Square expanded in 1924 to cover an entire city block stretching from Broadway to Seventh Avenue along 34th Street.

To showcase the opening of the “World’s Largest Store” and its 1 million square feet of retail space at the start of the busy holiday shopping season, Macy’s decided to throw New York a parade on Thanksgiving morning. In spite of its timing, the parade was not actually about Thanksgiving at all but Christmas.
Which was the beginning of rolling out Christmas right after Thanksgiving. Macy's small business dream became big.

Legends of Brockton Art Display
Downtown Brockton

Have you spotted any artistic cutouts of shoes around Downtown Brockton? These are a part of an initiative under the Arts & Culture Plan called "Legends of Brockton". This initiative places artistically rendered shoes celebrating the industrial history of the city, while the art on the shoes celebrates the cultural diversity of the city. They are scatted throughout the downtown area at high-visibility location. Each shoe represents a different culture that calls Brockton home, and uses folklore as its language.

Check out Brockton Art Plan's website to learn more about the shoes and find shoes around downtown. The shoes are temporary installments and will only remain until the first of the year, depending on weather. So go out and check out some shoes!

Below are images of two shoes in different locations downtown.
Climate Can Do: How to be Sustainable During the Holidays

Our beloved holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years - are fast approaching. There is so much to celebrate but there is also so much more trash generated during these times than usual. With the holiday season soon upon us, let’s take a moment to consider all the ways we can be more environmentally friendly.

Gift Giving: When you plan what to gift for your loved ones, consider a handmade gift instead of buying new items. These thoughtful gifts will be sure to make your loved ones happy. Check out some ideas for handmade gifts below:
  • Bake a dessert!
  • Crochet something! There are so many easy to follow tutorials on YouTube that are beginner friendly. Check out this Youtube video!

Gift Wrapping: Please be mindful when wrapping your gifts. Wrapping paper with any metallics, foil, glitter, texture are not recyclable. Instead of using store brought wrapping papers, you can use any brown paper bag, newspapers, or even magazines to wrap your gift together beautifully. Check out Treehugger's website for some eco-friendly wrapping alternatives with examples.

Holiday Decor: Decorative lights are such a big part of home decor during the holidays. This year, try using LED lights instead of traditional incandescent lights. LEDs can use up to 90% less energy than traditional lights and there are many options on the market, making them very affordable.

Let's all do our part to have a fun and eco-friendly holiday season this year!
