Story from the Field
Building Relationships

It was apparent as soon as we arrived in Pungohuayco, Ecuador, a mountain village in the north, the people from the Covenant Church were thrilled the team had returned. They youth group from Claremont Covenant Church in San Diego had been the first team to visit the village three years earlier. When the team arrived they were surprised almost everyone in the church remembered the names of team members who had returned. The church made a special "Cuy" dinner (roasted guinea pic) which really showed the excitement about having the team there. Personally, I think teams underestimate the connection they make with the local people when they go on mission trips. To return over and over again to build relationships with the same people is so important. I wish every team did that. It was obvious to me all week in Pungohuayco the mission team from San Diego had made a big difference in their faith and lives through their return.

The Merge Trip Facilitator for Europe, Mario and Eva Marguez, Are also the pastors of a Covenant Church plant in Norrkoping, Sweden. The church is growing as young Swedes and immigrants are coming to Christ in this difficult place for ministry. Overall the church is a mix of local Swedes and many immigrants families, especially from the Middle East. The church operates in multiple languages, including English, Swedish and Arabic. Pastor Mario himself is from Mexico.

The church is very active in outreach events and programs in their community. They are looking for team members to help them do outreach and sports programs for children, connect with families in the community, participate in discipling the young believers in the church, and other activities to make Christ more visible in the Swedish community.

Although Europe doesn't have the financial poverty of other areas, it has spiritual poverty unrivaled in the world. If there is any place missionaries are needed it is Europe.

Housing will be in homes of members of the congregation. There will be opportunities to visit local museums, beautiful city centers in other towns nearby, andeven a trip to Stockholm is offered as an extra event.
