Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) New Mexico works to increase awareness around energy development and its impact on the state and New Mexico's families and businesses. Through education and non-partisan support, CEA works to provide families and businesses with reliable American energy to fuel their homes, cars, and lives. Affordable energy is vital to New Mexico and its economy, and no one is more affected by energy development, and the policies that are written, than consumers. The Gila National Forest wants all our visitors to have a safe and enjoyable time while visiting the forest. The Gila National Forest is 3.3 million acres with numerous entry and exit points, and most of it has very limited cell service. With hunting season less than a month away we want to remind you of a few important safety tips.
- If possible, travel with a companion. Leave a copy of your itinerary with a responsible person that you know. Include details such as make, model, year, and license plate of your vehicle and when you plan to return. Be specific about where you are going to be with a starting point and an ending point.
- Wear appropriate clothing for the season and be aware that the Gila NF ranges from 4,200 - 10,900 feet in elevation.
- Bring enough water for your trip. Water is never a guarantee in the high desert ecosystem that compiles the Gila NF.
- Learn basic first aid so that you know how to identify and treat injuries, and illnesses. Carry a first aid trip.
We always hope for the best, but in the event someone you know is missing these are the steps to take:
- Call the New Mexico State Police Dispatch. That number is 575-382-2500. All search and rescue incidents in New Mexico are coordinated by the NM State Police.
- Know the starting point of their itinerary, the make, model, year and license plate of their vehicle.
- If you know of any pre-existing medical problems, please inform the dispatcher.

Take a bite out of downtown Silver City, NM on Labor Day weekend, as chefs serve up their culinary delights for the 19th annual Taste of Downtown! Walk around downtown on Saturday, August 31 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and get delicious tastes from fifteen eateries. Restaurants, a local brewery, and specialty food establishments are offering delicious, sweet and savory tastes for only $20 a ticket. A bonus taste at the Silco will also be offered!
This year, local food is being featured and a few of the restaurants have incorporated locally grown food into their tastes. Potala Palace, Revel, Silver City Food Co-op and Vicki's Eatery will all feature local food in their taste. This was one of the original goals of the Taste of Downtown event, to use local food along with introducing residents and visitors to the downtown restaurants.
"We are very happy that these restaurants are using local food, states Patrick Hoskins, President of Silver City MainStreet. Supporting local growers who sell to our independent and local restaurants is a complete circle of sustainability.
If you haven't been downtown recently, this is the day to come downtown and have fun tasting some delicious local food and discovering our great local restaurants. Forty-one downtown Silver City businesses are also participating in the Love Local Celebration offering deals, discounts and more free drawings."
Some of the tastes to be enjoyed this year include mini sandwich of slow cooked pork with coleslaw and chipotle cream at the Corner Kitchen, a natural and vegan taste at Potala Palace, Italian meatballs in sweet basil red sauce with locally grown basil at Vicki's Eatery, Black Bean Quinoa Soup at Tapas Tree Grill, brownies at Honeebee Goods, and house made hummus on crostini from Diane's Restaurant are a few of the sweet and savory tastes that will be served. Other participants include Little Toad Creek, Tranquil Buzz Coffee House, Silver City Food Co-op, Diane's Bakery and Deli, The Fry House, The Mint Chip, Mick's 33 Lounge, and Q's Southern Bistro. A bonus taste at the Silco Theatre will also be available. Silver City MainStreet is grateful to the participating eateries for their support!

New computers being released to be ready for back to school and the fall season. MSI released 2 new families of laptops this week with 10th generation i7's and batteries sufficient to operate them for up to 16 hours. I am kind of wondering if that is a typo and tomorrow they will say 6 hours or even 10 hours. So many new models have been announced in the last couple weeks; but, I confess that this release by MSI is the first that really caught my attention.
I have been hop
ing to see something special in new machines. Lately, all of the new releases have been boring because they include small evolutionary improvements instead of revolutionary improvements of a nature that could make me want to go out and buy a new computer. Generation 9 of Intel processors brought new smaller footprints (for the chip itself) but the package was still the same size and they used a little less current (reflected in lower heat production) so we could choose slightly faster chips for laptops or build slightly smaller laptops.
The new MSI Prestige series laptops come with a video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650), up to 32gb of RAM, 1tb m.2 nvme SS storage, no LAN port, no DVD and some of the latest USB ports to get ultra-thin and ultra-light and a cooling system intended to allow gaming or CAD/CAM without the risk of overheating and enough battery to be productive for up to 16 hours. They are supposed to show up at retailers by September 9. I am still trying to imagine a 15" screen that provides 4k resolution. Oh, did I mention that this 15" laptop weighs a delightful 3.5lbs?
If this is just the first hint of what we will have for the winter buying season, I might finally get excited about new machines again.
Benediktson Computer, Inc. would be delighted to configure and customize one of these for your portable computer needs, please contact us at (575) 956-9723 or email to
