Opt-Out Form For Short-Term Rentals
 Now Available
North Pond Plan Meeting Tonight
Dear Neighbor,

As you know, our office fought for restrictions on short-term rentals.  While the ordinance as passed fell far short of what I believe is necessary, one important gain is the creation of a "prohibited buildings" list.  Any property that is landlord-owned, or governed by a homeowner's association of any kind, can notify the city that the property prohibits short term rentals.   The City will deny a license to anyone seeking a short term rental license at that address (subject to an appeals process, during which time the property can continue to be listed and rented).

The Department of Business and Consumer Affairs has released the official affidavit required to place your building on the "prohibited buildings" list. Here are the instructions.  I encourage all rental buildings, condo and co-op buildings and townhouse associations to submit this form to create an initial level of protection for your building.

If your association would like to schedule a seminar on compliance with the regulations, contact us.

Long-Term Homeowner Rebate Passes City Council

Yesterday, City Council unanimously passed a Homeowner Property Rebate Ordinance.  The ordinance offers tiered rebates up to $200 based on household income. Taxpayers 60 years of age who have owned their homes at least 18 years and whose home's assessed value increased by 30% are eligible for an additional $150 rebate.  Here is the ordinance and schedule of rebates here.

As your Alderman,  I promised that if any tax relief was offered to Chicago homeowners, it must touch our Ward to support those long-term owners who have seen the paper value of their homes increase just as their income becomes fixed.  Though more restricted than I  originally  sought,  this rebate does reach many of the longtime owners who helped build our neighborhood over the decades. No new taxes or fees will be necessitated by the rebates, as this one-year program will be financed by a one-year source, the over $20 million dollars in transfer taxes paid by the recent re-sale of the Chicago Skyway to another set of private investors.

I encourage you to participate in this program and we will provide details soon as it goes into effect. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have questions.
