Show Me A Good Loser...

and I'll show you a loser.

Yes, my father (may his memory be blessed! Don't judge me, Dad!) used to say this quite often when competing or watching others - including me - compete in sports.

I grew up with the old-school philosophy that winning is everything and one never learns anything from losing.

I learned later in life that nothing could have been farther from the truth and - in reality - my Dad (a championship squash player) would probably admit that he learned more from losing than winning.

A foundational thinker to my coaching is Marilee Adams, with her book "Change Your Questions, Change Your Life" core to much of how I coach.

As covered previously, most of us grow up as Judgers, with this win/lose mentality. We are mostly reactionary in how we behave, looking to focus blame on others, and come off predominantly as negative and pessimistic.

Through her Choice Map (linked here), Marilee directs us to the Learner Mindset, where we choose thoughtfully, are solution-focused, and relate with a win/win mindset.

To learn more about how my coaching can help you switch from Judger to Learner, please join me on Thursday, March 23rd from 3 - 4 pm EDT for a webinar that will include a discussion on why we should celebrate losing, as well as a live sample coaching session.

Best,

Peter
