Your heart loves you more than 80,000 times a day—no gifts or cards required (although dark chocolate might help!). Come take an insider's look at what's happening...

A beating heart, as shown in a heart ulstrasound.

This ultrasound picture of the heart shows the main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, at the top of the triangle. The thin lines below it are a heart valve—it's captivating to watch them open and close with each heartbeat.

I can still recall the awe I experienced early in my cardiology training when I first viewed these images of the wonders happening within. A miracle that we seldom take time to appreciate.

Today is a great day to celebrate your own heart. Reflect on how you can strengthen it with healthy food, with physical activity, and with fun. Hope it's the best Valentine's Day yet for you and your sweet heart!

This Colorado Doctor Assigns Gaples Institute Nutrition Course as "Homework" to Patients, Staff—Even Family and Friends

Kenneth Wool, MD

Dr. Kenneth Wool, a Colorado physician, says the Gaples Institute interactive public nutrition course is "invariably at the top of each patient's instructions" that he gives the end of an office visit.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Wool has seen the devastating impact of poor diet in his heart patients—and he's also seen the amazing benefits of shifting to healthier eating.

"I literally refer to the course as 'your homework' and assign it to each patient," he says, noting that patients who take the course "realize the benefits of lifestyle changes above and beyond medications and procedures."

Dr. Wool also assigns the course to his staff because "it allows my nurses to go through specifics of diet on an individual basis" with patients. He even directs family and friends to take the course because it addresses so many health and nutrition questions.

According to Dr. Wool, the Gaples Institute course is "the absolute best source available to reinforce my nutrition and lifestyle/exercise discussion."
