Our Professional Development Co-Director Richard Rojas serves as a Senior Planner at the City of Carson, and has previously worked in Riverside County, Henderson, NV, and San Luis Obispo. He is experienced in development review, preparation and maintenance of comprehensive plans and development of design and land use regulations. articipating in APA Los Angeles' volunteer Board of Directors is
a great way to get involved in the local planning community, network with other planning professionals, and give back to the profession. We have exciting plans for 2017 and hope you will consider contributing your time and talents to one of APA's largest, most active sections nationwide!
There are three ways to get involved:
- Elected positions (two year terms)
- Appointed positions (one year terms)
- Committee volunteers (one year commitment requested)
Board members are expected to attend one meeting per month and spend additional time as needed to fulfill their duties, which vary by position. Elected and appointed members are required to live or work in Los Angeles County, and to be APA members or become members before their terms begin (a discounted Chapter-only membership is available).

Your input is needed at this workshop to help refine the policies and guidelines included in the Specific Plan.

Welcome to Angelus-Rosedale cemetery, one of the oldest and most storied cemeteries in Southern California. The resting place of six former Los Angeles Mayors and others whose names Angelenos with a knowledge of our city's geography should recognize: David Burbank, Harvey H. Wilcox, Frederick T. Woodman.
Join APA for a walking tour of the cemetery by preservationist Laura Meyers, as well as a discussion of the planning aspects of cemeteries, and this cemetery in particular. When, how, and for whom was the cemetery founded? What determined its demographic makeup over the years? Who are some of the famous Angelenos buried at Rosdedale? What role does the cemetery play in the identity of the West Adams neighborhood? How does the cemetery operate in the face of changing economics and trends in the burial of loved ones? What are some of the entitlement processes involved in planning cemeteries? What does the future hold? These and many other questions will be discussed.
The event will wrap up around lunchtime, and those of us who are hungry will head over to Papa Cristo's Greek Restaurant, a mainstay in the neighborhood.

APA Los Angeles Bylaws Update Reflects Modern Operations and Commitment to Diversity
Over the past year, the APA Los Angeles Board has been collaborating to draft updated bylaws for our organization. Our bylaws provide guidance for our goals and duties, how we function as a Board, and the roles each of us play. In the 13 years since the bylaws were last updated, the organization's operations had changed and policies had shifted. The updated bylaws adopted by the Board on September 27 were not intended as a dramatic overhaul, but as an opportunity to modernize and reflect current practices and priorities. In addition to operational updates, the new bylaws reflect APA Los Angeles' commitment to diversity within the organization and the planning profession. As such, we established goals and duties to:
- Create, cultivate, and sustain an inclusive environment that encourages diversity in membership and programming.
- Advocate for political, economic, and environmental justice through Section programming and initiatives to create institutional change within the planning and policy field.
- Ensure that all programs display well-rounded subject matter that addresses issues of equity and promotes the inclusion of diverse perspectives in program creation, organization, and implementation.

Planning Month and #IAmPlanning Social Media Challenge!
In honor of #PlanningMonth, the YPG of California and APA National are teaming up for the 2nd annual #IAmPlanning Social Media Campaign. This campaign was created to give young planners, both APA members and non-members, the opportunity to share the reasons they chose the planning profession. The purpose of the campaign is to highlight the different faces and backgrounds of young planners across the nation.
Please use your platform to generate buzz about the #IAmPlanning Campaign and encourage your network to participate. The instructions above can be downloaded and shared on various social media platforms with a short explanation of the campaign. #IAmPlanning is a great way to engage a new generation of planners in the American Planning Association at the local, state, and national level.

Call for Nominations: Cal Poly Pomona's 2017 Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban Planning
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona seeks nominations for the 2017 William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban and Regional Planning. The Dale Prize recognizes planning excellence, creates dialogue between scholars and practitioners, and enriches the education of planning students. The Dale Prize is awarded in pairs: a $5,000 award to a scholar and a $5,000 award to a practitioner. Awardees spend two days on the campus, meet with students in classes, and participate in a colloquium and other events.
We are looking for a
Dale Prize Scholar who will offer insight into this sweep of history - the past and the future of the Southern California suburb.
We are seeking a
Dale Prize Practitioner
who will provide insights on the dynamics of local and sub-regional governance and suggest ways forward to address challenges associated with immigration, racial and ethnic diversity, economic expansion and workforce development, housing affordability, traffic congestion, and climate change.

Pro Bono Community Planning Assistance Now Available from APA California
APA's California Chapter has launched a program to provide volunteer professional planning assistance to financially constrained municipalities and community groups throughout the state. By pairing expert planning professionals with residents and other stakeholders from communities with limited resources, the Community Planning Assistance Team (CPAT) program seeks to foster community education, engagement, and empowerment. Team members are selected for their expertise and will engage community representatives in a short but intensive planning process that can develop visions, strategies, plans, or processes.
APA members that wish to volunteer their services and cities or organizations that need pro bono professional planning assistance may visit
