Why pancakes? And what does 'shrove' mean?
Ash Wednesday is the solemn day that begins a season of fasting and repentance, known as Lent. In England (where the Episcopal Church has its roots), the faithful would go to confession on the day before and be 'shriven' (forgiven or absolved) of their sins. Hence, the day before Ash Wednesday is called 'Shrove Tuesday.'
Many Christian communities mark the days leading up to Lent with a time of feasting and celebration. While Carnivale and Mardi Gras are famous for some outrageous costumes and revelry, other Christians mark the final day before a season of fasting by eating as much sugary goodness as they can.
In England, Anglicans would use up their eggs and butter by making batches of pancakes, topping them with syrup. This tradition is centuries old, and includes a story of a woman, in the middle of making pancakes, who heard the bell marking the start of confession and then ran through the town towards church, flipping her pancake in a frying pan! This story lives on today, where there is a Pancake Day Race of women flipping pancakes as they run through the streets of Olney, England.
At St. John's, we've moved our pancake day to "Shrove Sunday" - which is this coming Sunday.
Come out and support our Youth Group as they flip flapjacks for you!
