Bereshit

This week we learned about creation and the Garden of Eden. Some of our classes learned and then reviewed the seven days of creation. Other classes talked about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The classes that spoke about the Garden of Eden also discussed how we can better take care of the earth in modern times.

Gan Nitzan Update

By Debbie Wells

This week, Gan Nitzan celebrated parsha Bereshit. We sang the song “G-d Created,” about the seven days of creation, and shared two books illustrating the text from the Torah. We talked about Hoshana Rabbah, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah and how much we look forward to doing it all again next year. We also discussed how doing mitzvot is a way that we can help G-d in continuing to create a better world. Our new Hebrew letter is daled and we took a sneak peek at the letter hey. Then we danced Mayim Mayim and the Hora to Hava Nagila. Finally we held our class meeting, voiced our opinions about the day, sang Adon Olam and Shavua Tov and distributed stickers. Our gemilut hasadim this week included: Gabe helped Nana sweep her patio; Tehila helped Ima sweep and everything; Noa helped daddy make pancakes; Mila played with her sister; Jonny and Rachel went to a sleepover with 3 friends and were very nice and played nicely; Octavia helped her daddy make chocolate, apples and honey for a special breakfast; and, Eva drew her whole name. Ms. Livi brought in some cute clothes that she can no longer wear, for our tzedakah project. Please send clothes, shoes, toys and books that the children can no longer use to give to children who need them. Next week: Meet at the Audubon Zoo, Sunday,10/30, 10:00 a.m.

Shafrifriyot and Parparim Update

Teacher: Penina Berman

This week the Shafrifriyot and Parparim classes joined together to learn about Parshat Bereshit. They discussed the miracle of creation and how God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. To honor this miracle they played a creation version of "duck, duck, goose" in which they changed the phrase to fit one of the days of creation. For example, on the first day God created dark and light, so they used the phrase "day, day, night". They did this for each day of creation.

We cannot wait to go to the zoo next week to learn about the animals for Parshat Noach!

Tzipporim Update

Teacher: Sierra Sager

This week the Tzipporim class learned about the Garden of Eden and how Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.  They discussed what changed for Adam and Eve once they had eaten the forbidden fruit and how God knew that Adam and Eve had disobeyed even though they did not tell God about their indiscretion.  The Tzipporim class then talked about the importance of caring for the earth and how people can better care for the world.

Ha Ya'ar Update

Teacher: Scott Hart

This week the Ha Ya'ar class began studying Genesis. They focused on the first Jews mentioned in the Torah, Avram/Avraham and Sarai/Sarah. After snack they learned about several mitzvot and then began creating their own tree of life.
