Gan Nitzan Update

By Debbie Wells

Today Gan Nitzan practiced the Jewish value of hachnasat orchim, welcoming guests. Ms. Reeva Adelman was our guest teacher and taught us all about being mensches (good people). We learned that all the mitzvot (commandments) we do, like gemilut hasadim and tzedakah, help us to be mensches and help make the world a better place (tikkun olam). We shared the book Sarah Laughs by Jacqueline Jules, and learned that Abraham and Sarah were famous for hachnasat orchim. Our Hebrew letters this week were nun and shin, and we’re getting really good at alef-bet yoga. We all did many acts of loving kindness this week, and Gabe brought in a whole bag of clothes for tzedakah. Also, Ms. Livi brought in a big bag of children’s books that she no longer needs. We hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving centerpieces (they’ll dry clear). Join us next Saturday at 10:00 am for Shul School Shabbat!!! We’ll be performing a song before kiddush and hope you’ll join us for some Israeli dancing after lunch.

Shafrifriyot Update

Teacher: Penina Berman

This week Shafrifriyot learned the story of our forefather and foremother, Abraham and Sarah. We talked about what it means to be a guest or a host in a home like when Abraham and Sarah welcomed the angels into their tent. We discussed the proper way to greet people and how to act when we are in another person's home.

After learning about Abraham and Sarah, we reviewed some Hebrew phrases and letters.

Lastly, we spoke about the purpose of a yad when reading from the Torah. We ended class by each making our own yad and singing Shalom Chaverim before everyone left.

Parparim Update

Teacher: Cassie Jacobs

This week the Parparim class discussed and explored gratitude and kindness. They created a class definition for gratitude and spoke about how they express gratitude for the things and people they are grateful for in their lives. The students created gratitude mobiles as a physical reminder of these people and things. Afterwards, they practiced how to say Thanks in multiple languages. In Hebrew, we say Todah while in Spanish we say Gracias. Ask your students about how to say Thanks in other languages.

Tzipporim Update

Teacher: Sierra Sager

This week the Tzipporim class read the story about the twelve spies and their first foray into the land of Canaan. The twelve spies came back to the Hebrew people with varying accounts of what they found while they were in Canaan. The Tzipporim class held a mock trial using the various accounts of the land from the spies to determine if the Hebrews should continue and go into the land of Canaan. Talk to your student to find out how the Tzipporim court chose to proceed and if they chose the same path as the Hebrews.

Ha Ya'ar Update

Teacher: Scott Hart

This week the Ha Ya'ar class studied the beginning of Exodus. They are using the Etz Chayim each class to familiarize themselves with the Torah text and become more skilled in navigating the text. Afterwards, they watched excerpts from 'The Ten Commandments' to enhance their learning and understanding of the text.

This Saturday night our teens will meet at Rabbi Hoffman's house for our Teen Learning Havdalah!
