Week of Sunday, November 5th, 2023

Dear Parents,

This week our students learned about living a life shaped by their Jewish values. The Ilanot class practiced being good hosts like Abraham and Sarah. The Parparim class learned about a variety of mitzvot and spoke about how they intend to follow them. The Devorim and Nesharim classes came together this week and explored a variety of Jewish values. Each student chose one that resonated with them right now in their lives and chose another they would like to incorporate more into their daily lives. How are you actively living by your Jewish values?

Rabbi Hoffman

Visits the Classroom

Rabbi Hoffman visited the Parparim class this week to discuss mitzvot. There is a common misconception that mitzvot means "good deeds". Mitzvah means commandment and many mitzvot are good deeds to create a strong, cohesive community. Check out our mitzvah tree at Shul School to see some of the mitzvot our students do each week.

Ilanot Update

Teacher: Penina Berman

This week the Ilanot class learned the story of Abraham and Sarah. They learned about how Abraham put his trust in G-d and left behind all he had known. They put on a little play retelling the story and then they made decorations for their classroom to make it homey like Abraham and Sarah's tent. The Ilanot students finished class by practicing how to be good hosts like Sarah and Abraham.

Parparim Update

Teacher: Scott Hart

This week the Parparim class studied mitzvot. They went on a 'hunt' for slips of paper with mitzvot written on them that were hidden around the classroom. They talked about what it means to do a mitzvah and learned that there are 613 mitzvot in Judaism. The Parparim students even did a mitzvah for their teacher, Mr. Hart, and got him water for his scratchy throat. It's great to see the students internalizing their learning so quickly and living by what they learn each class.

Devorim and Nesharim Update

Teachers: Sierra Sager and Ali Perez

This week, the Nesharim and Devorim classes discussed Jewish values, how to express the Jewish values that are personally meaningful to them, and the importance of living by their values as part of fulfilling their part in repairing the world. The class split into groups of two and created a skit to showcase the Jewish values they chose. They ended their class by reading and discussing the midrash "Rebecca Goes Forth", an interpretation of the story of Rebecca choosing to leave her home and marry Isaac.
