Week of Sunday, October 22nd, 2023

Dear Parents,

This week our Shul School classes studied Parashat Noach and learned about important mitzvot. The Ilanot class learned the story of Noah and spoke about what animals they would make sure to bring on the ark. The Parparim class focused on mitzvot and learned about bikur cholim. The Devorim and Nesharim classes read a midrash about Noah and spoke about his efforts to show G-d that people can change when they embrace a growth mindset. It was a wonderful day of learning. We can't wait to see what we will learn this coming Sunday.

Rabbi Hoffman

Visits the Classroom

Rabbi Hoffman visited the Nesharim class to talk about reconciling that the Noah story is hard to read about and whether the people knew they were being wicked. At this time, there were no laws set forth for the people to follow. If there were no laws, how could the people know they were being wicked? It led to a thoughtful discussion about rules and how people learn to conduct themselves in society.

Ilanot Update

Teacher: Penina Berman

This week the Ilanot class learned about Noah's ark. They read several books that told the story of Noah and spoke about the animals they would make sure were on the ark. The students then took some time to draw their favorite animals and put them on their class ark. After, finishing the lesson on Noah's ark, the Ilanot students took time to discuss the mitzvot they performed over the past week. Each of the students received a mitzvah leaf to write or draw out a mitzvah they performed. These leaves will be displayed on our mitzvah tree in the hallway of the education wing. Check out the Shul School mitzvah tree next time you're at Shir Chadash and see the mitzvot our students perform each week.

Parparim Update

Teacher: Scott Hart

This week the Parparim class learned about empathy and the mitzvah of bikur cholim, visiting the sick. Isobel enjoyed the lesson so much she wanted to continue learning more and finish the booklet on mitzvot. In line with their lesson, the students also learned the misheberach, prayer for healing the sick. They wrapped up class by making get well cards for people who are sick. Zachary and Reeva said their favorite part of the day was making the get well cards. They plan to make cards for their friends in the future if they get sick.

Nesharim and Devorim Update

Teacher: Ali Perez

This week, the Nesharim and Devorim discussed the story of Noah's ark and how long it took for Noah to build the ark - hoping people would change their ways. They spoke about what a growth mindset is and how personal growth can sometimes take a long time - as long as it takes to build an ark! They ended the day by creating "My Mitzvah Improvement Plans" and discussing how they can use a growth mindset when they accept the challenge of performing mitzvot they find difficult to fulfill.
