Week of Sunday, January 28th, 2024

Dear Parents,

This week Shul School picked up right where we left off before Tu B'Shevat at Longue Vue Gardens. Ilanot went back to learning the parsha of the week, Parparim continues to tackle big concepts like chesed, kvod, and lashon hara, and Nesharim is exploring why we pray and how we can connect with God and our community through prayer.

Important information to make note of: We have Shul School February 4th, but we will not have Shul School on February 11th. Shul School will resume on February 18th. February 18th is the first Gan class of the Spring Semester. On February 18th, Shul School will have guests, Basya Schechter and David Buchbinder, lead each class in a musical workshop. Make sure your children are on time for class!

Ilanot Update

Teacher: Penina Berman

This week the Ilanot class continued on with their parsha of the week. Since they weren't in the classroom last week, they picked up where they left off - Moses leading the Hebrews in the desert to the promised land. Their focus this past Sunday was "Moses on the Mountain". The Ilanot students learned about Moses going up Mount Sinai and coming down with the Ten Commandments. They discussed what they would make into commandments if they were able to choose. They finished up class talking about how the past few parashot they reviewed constitute the story of Passover. Once realizing this, they insisted on searching for the afikomen in the classroom. Passover can't come soon enough for these kids.

Parparim Update

Teacher: Scott Hart

This week the Parparim class began with a review of what they learned about Tu B'Shevat last week at Longue Vue Gardens. They then watched a short video on Tu B’Shevat to fill in anything they may have forgotten. Then they moved on to this week's focus, chesed and kvod, kindness and respect. In particular, they spoke about kindness and respect towards parents and why it is so important. Isobel and Zachary talked about how they show kindness and respect to their own parents.

The Parparim class followed this conversation about respect for their parents, with a discussion about lashon hara, evil speech, and how harmful it can be. The class then learned the Hebrew words for these concepts. The Parparim students finished class by learning the ‘Shema’ in American Sign Language.

Devorim and Nesharim Update

Teacher: Ali Perez

This week, the Nesharim class continued working on their Self Care Siddurim. They used their Hebrew names to make constellations, which will become their siddurim covers. Rabbi David visited the class, where they discussed the importance of prayer and why we pray. The students talked about which prayers were their favorites and how praying together in synagogue helps us feel closer to our community and like we are all supporting each other. The class ended with a review of the Torah blessings and learning the beginning of the Torah service.
