Dearest Friends,

Happy New Year! And for Shumla, 2023 means happy 25th Anniversary year! To kick off the year in joy and community, our Staff and Board gathered together in San Marcos for a birthday party complete with cake, candles and recognition of those who made this birthday possible. We are so excited to share this milestone year with you. You are the reason we have so much to celebrate!

Wishing you all the best in 2023,

Jessica

Thank you Shumla friends, together we achieved our 2022 goal of raising $200,000!

Our year ended with an outpouring of your love for Shumla, our staff and our mission. We felt it with every dollar donated. From all of us, thank you for your support in 2022!

Next month is Shumla's 25th birthday!

Our milestone birthday is coming up on February 12th and we have a lot to celebrate! We'll kick things off with a look at our Staff and Board party to celebrate our many accomplishments over the last 25 years and to look forward to the next 25.

We caught up with each other and reminisced about our 25 years together. We celebrated our out-going Board President Lacy Finley and welcomed our new Board President Mike Webb. And we expressed our deep gratitude to our longtime supporter Elton Prewitt after 20 years as a Shumla Board Member. It was a wonderful ride down memory lane!

Be on the look out on social media on Sunday, February 12th as we kick off our 25th birthday with a special post! Click the links below to follow us on social media.

We have new radiocarbon dates from Halo Shelter!

Shumla's Science Director, Dr. Karen Steelman, will be sharing new data from The Hearthstone Project. Last year, the team conducted fieldwork to determine paint layer stratigraphy for Halo Shelter. Using microscopy, we can chart out the order that the paint was applied to the rock shelter wall. Based on that information, Steelman returned to conduct radiocarbon dating of the pictographs. Results from thirteen pictographs at the site are remarkably consistent, further confirming that the mural was a planned composition. We want to share these new and exciting results with you!
