Celebrating Hispanic Heritage in Texas & Collin County
September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. But if you know Texas at all, you know Hispanic heritage isn’t just something we celebrate once a year. It’s woven into our food, our music, our neighborhoods, our politics, and our history. In fact, you can’t tell the story of Texas without Latinos at the very center of it.
When I think about this month, one voice always comes to mind: Dolores Huerta. She co-founded the United Farm Workers, fought side by side with César Chávez, and gave us the rallying cry “Sí, se puede” which means “Yes, we can.” That wasn’t just a slogan. It was a declaration of power. People told her farm workers couldn’t organize, that it wasn’t possible. She said, “watch us.” And they did. Her words still ring out across America today, from union halls to the White House. Why does that matter here in Collin County? Because “Sí, se puede” is a reminder that when we come together, whether we’re canvassing a neighborhood, starting a small business, running for office, or just standing up for what’s right, we can make change. We can win.
Texas Roots, Texas Pride
Latino contributions to Texas go back centuries. Think of Juan Seguín, a Tejano hero who fought for Texas independence. Or Lorenzo de Zavala, who helped establish the Republic of Texas as its first Vice President. Fast forward a century: civil rights leaders founded LULAC right here in Texas in 1929, and their fight for equality continues today. And let’s be real, Texas wouldn’t be Texas without Tejano music, Selena, breakfast tacos, and... some... not all just some Tex-Mex. That’s culture that’s not just celebrated, it’s loved every single day.
Here in Collin County, Latinos make up nearly 20% of our community. But this is about more than numbers, it’s about impact.
- Latino-owned businesses fuel our economy and bring flavor to our daily lives.
- Latino workers keep our county running, even as they face rising costs of rent, groceries, and insurance.
- Latino leaders are shaping our schools, neighborhoods, and civic life.
- And Latino Democrats are powering the CCDP, as precinct chairs, committee members, donors, volunteers, and organizers.
Yet, at the very same time, state Republican politicians are working overtime to silence these contributions. They attack public schools with voucher schemes that drain funding. They pass laws that target immigrants and divide communities. They try to make it harder to vote, especially for communities of color. They celebrate culture when it suits them, while undermining Latino families’ freedom to thrive. That’s why “Sí, se puede” is more than a chant. It’s a call to action right here in Collin County.
From the Author
My name is Darrel Evans, and I’m a white man. I can’t speak from lived Latino experience. But I can say this: I see how much Collin County owes to our Latino friends, neighbors, and colleagues. I see how much strength and vision you bring to our party and our future. And I know we need more Latino voices in committee leadership and decision-making as we move forward. That’s not just a nice idea, that’s a commitment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Join the Fight, Sí, Se Puede in Collin County
Dolores Huerta said, “Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” That means right here, right now, in Collin County:
- If you’re Latino and thinking about running for office, we need you.
- If you want to knock doors or make calls, join us.
- If you’re looking to shape the future of this county, pull up a chair, because you belong at this table.
We’re building something bigger than any one of us, and we can’t do it without you. Hispanic heritage is Texas heritage. It’s in our past, our present, and our future. From Dolores Huerta’s fearless cry of “Sí, se puede” to the young Latino leaders rising right here in Collin County, the message is the same: Yes, we can, and together, we will.
Because Latino heritage is Texas freedom, the freedom to learn in strong schools, to thrive in safe neighborhoods, and to be heard at the ballot box. That’s the future we’re fighting for.
Yes you can, become a precinct chair!

Do you remember when life didn’t feel like one long Yellow Brick Road to authoritarianism?
We may not have been dancing through life, but at least we weren’t waking up every day wondering “what now?” The truth is, we cannot click our heels and wish our way back to normal. If we want change, we have to build it together.
And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
Join us for Defy: A Wickedly Democratic Evening on Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 PM at Event1013 in downtown Plano, where the Ozdust Ballroom comes to life.
This is more than a fundraiser. It’s a chance to gather as Democrats, to get motivated, and to power the Collin County Democratic Party’s mission of recruiting, training, and promoting the candidates who will stand up for our future. We are ready to fight back, ready to win, and ready to prove that the people of Texas are stronger than any Wicked Witch's politics.
Help prove that when Democrats unite, even the Wicked can’t hold us down. As Rep. Mihaela Plesa said, “Find a way to be in the way.” Being in the way is defiance.

Join Collin County Democratic Party in conjunction with local activists to protest on No Kings Day II, October 18th at the northeast corner of Parker and Preston in Plano, TX. RAIN OR SHINE!
In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. We’ve all seen them crack down on free speech, detain people for their political views, threaten to deport American citizens, and defy the courts. They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.
Join us on: 10/18/25 from 10-12pm as we say: no thrones, no crowns, no kings. Check out nokings.org for more information.
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Your Local Party Is Listening!
We need to hear from younger voters who are fed up with the cost of college and the state of the climate. From working-class families who are stretched too thin and feel ignored. From renters struggling with sky-high prices. From Black, Latino, and Asian communities whose voices have too often been left out of the political conversation. From people who believe in change but haven’t yet seen a place for themselves in our party.
We want you in this conversation. We need you in this conversation.
So here’s our ask. If you haven’t taken the survey yet, please do. If you know someone who hasn’t, send it their way. If you’re part of a community group, a union, a place of worship, or just a big group chat, we’d love to connect.
This is not about checking a box. It’s about building something real and lasting. A party where everyone feels seen and heard. A county where power belongs to the people. A future that includes all of us.
Your voice matters. Your story matters. And we’re listening.
Keep the conversation going! Keep building! Together!

How To Radicalize The Democratic Party
Why the internet won’t move the party left but filling seats will.
For regular Lone Star Left readers, this isn’t a Texas story. In general, Texas Democrats know that our base has been electing young, progressive leadership (i.e., James Talarico, Jasmine Crockett, and Greg Casar), while our state party has been decentralizing power and passing the most progressive Democratic Party platform in the country. Oh, and for those who were asking, the Spanish outreach DID pass at the last SDEC meeting.
*The Collin County Democratic Party is trying to add more state and local information to The Rally. Michelle H. Davis writes a Substack that offers in-depth coverage of the Texas Legislature. Her unapologetically Progressive point of view is uniquely Texan and refreshing. There is a free subscription option in the link below.
