Another Successful NASCC Steel Conference!

T he 2017 NASCC Steel Conference is in the history books and proved to be another great opportunity to network with our partners and clients in the steel industry. This year's event drew approximately 4,500 attendees, with strong attendance from erectors and design engineers. Here are some of the high points for this year:
  • There was a noticeable shift in attendance toward younger professionals with a strong interest in technology and software design tools. Our customers, as well as our industry partners from Design Data and Tekla, were interested to see how our Momentum software tools can improve the efficiency of a structural steel design.
  • Torrey Dickinson, SidePlate Senior Project Manager, teamed up with Design Data in their booth, for a real-world demonstration of how the tools integrate with their SDS/2 product. If you missed it, give us a call to arrange a quick demo.
  • The technical presentations and the accompanying professional development credits continue to be a big draw for the show and likely a primary reason that attendance has doubled over the last 10 years. If you missed the technical presentation delivered by Behzad Rafezy, our Director of Research & Development titled "What Makes a Special Moment Frame Special", check out the accompanying article in this newsletter.
  • Proving once again that everyone loves an opportunity to "kick the tires", our full-size SidePlate bolted connection, fabricated by Thornton Steel Company (thorntonsteel.com), drew a lot of attention and was the hit of our booth. (see picture to right)
  • Our industry's love to exchange ideas over good food and beverages was evident at our hospitality event hosted with Design Data, across the street from the expo at the Ash Bar and Ember Room. With over 100 customers and partners attending, the food and beverages fueled lively discussion on a variety of topics including, ever-tightening project timelines, budget challenges and the latest industry developments. It was a great time.
We hope to see you in Baltimore next year!

What Makes a Special Moment Frame Special?

This question was explored in detail during a technical presentation at the NASCC Steel Conference in San Antonio earlier this spring led by Behzad Rafezy, PhD, Director of Research and Development at SidePlate Systems Inc. It was also published in the April issue of Modern Steel Construction magazine. The article identifies and reviews the critical stresses and detailing requirements of special moment frame systems in the post-Northridge era.  It goes on to discuss the advantages of using prequalified connections that meet the requirements of ANSI/AISC358-16,  Prequalified Connections for Intermediate Steel Frames for Seismic Applications.  Click Here for a reprint of the article.
