SidePlate
® Invests in the Industry's Future
By Pamela Prince
Manager of HR and Administration
SidePlate Systems, Inc.
S
idePlate understands the importance of developing the next generation of young Engineers. This desire to invest in the future has led us into a five-year sponsorship for the Engineering program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO). Cal Poly SLO provides the academic background to develop industry-ready structural engineers that upon graduation, go out to Engineering firms throughout the United States and the world, many becoming SidePlate customers.
This sponsorship includes updates to the lab space showcasing the industry's latest technology to convey an appreciation for constructability and practical building techniques. Much of the work, including painting, cleaning and building SidePlate models, is being done by a dedicated group of SidePlate employees including Henry Gallart himself, President and CEO.
In the spirit of Cal Poly's motto of "Learning by Doing", an idea for a future project is to feature a design competition where students apply their talents and expertise to near real-life design scenarios. This sponsorship is a great win for the University, the industry and the students and SidePlate is proud to be a part of it.

It's All About Efficiency
The summer issue of SEAA Connector magazine featured an article on the importance of pre-construction efficiency in the building process. As Jason Hoover of SidePlate explains in the article, the steel industry is moving toward prefabrication and modularization with more of the work being done in a controlled environment versus on the jobsite. The result is significantly reduced field erection time.

Steel Day Recap
AISC's annual Steel Day was held on September 15 with many events held around the country that provided an opportunity to witness first-hand how the domestic structural steel industry contributes to the building of America. The Chicago-area event took a trip just over the Wisconsin border to visit a SidePlate project currently being built at St. Catherine's Medical Center. Over lunch, attendees heard presentations on the project from Nick Gates - Eppstein Uhen Architects (architect), Dan Kilbert - GRAEF (structural engineer), Tammy Ames - Riley Construction (contractor) and SidePlate's own Jason Hoover. After lunch, the group visited the site and got to watch some steel being erected.

SidePlate Speaker at SE University
In June, Matt Mester, PE, SE, from SidePlate Systems, Inc., presented
Moment Frames: Design and Detailing per AISC 341 and 358
for SE University, a subscription-based continuing education program. Matt reviewed the design provisions of AISC 341 and the prequalified moment connections contained in AISC 358. He also discussed the restrictions on when these connections can be used and presented several useful charts which showed these limitations. The webinar was very well attended.
SE University speakers get to designate an organization for a donation, and Matt nominated the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California Foundation.
Matt chose the SEAOSC Foundation to fund student scholarships to "help the next generation of structural engineers."
Thank you, Matt, for sharing your knowledge with your SE University session, and your inspirational donation.

Another great ASPE Conference in Denver
The 2017 American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) Conference was held on July 12-15 in Denver, CO. This year's conference titled: "A Mile High Summit - The Art and Science of Estimating" focused on the latest emerging technologies hitting the steel industry. Erin Conaway, SidePlate's Southwest Regional Engineer has attended the conference for years and reported growing attendance each year with strong, engaged exhibit booth traffic. New this year, SidePlate hosted a drawing with the winner receiving a local customer appreciation event compliments of SidePlate. And the winner was drum-roll please... Phillip Brandt of Manhattan Construction from Oklahoma City, OK. Congratulations Phillip! We look forward to getting together with you. For more information on the conference or ASPE in general,
