SteelDay Success!

SidePlate embraced the 10 th anniversary of SteelDay in a very big way. It started with hosting two webinars for a nationwide audience. The first webinar, “How to Get a Complete Lateral System Overhaul That Saves Steel and Erection Time,” was a primer on what SidePlate brings to a project in terms of design efficiency, steel savings and how our team takes a significant amount of work off your plate. Next we presented, “Technical Training—Fabricator Detailing Department Tools,” which gave a high level view of SidePlate designed detailer tools that have saved hours and even days for detailing departments. Additionally, we supported a SteelDay event in conjunction with Clark Nexsen, Skanska, Dave Steel, ASPE South and AISC at N.C. State Fitts-Wollard Hall. Yes that is a lot of names, but the event was a top-notch celebration of the 230,000 square foot building that will focus on the Civil, Structural, Environmental and Construction departments. Another long list of names. As an interesting side note, Stephanie Kruep, a SidePlate Senior Project Engineer, went to N.C. State and was at the event to join in the fun. A big crowd showed up for a site tour and presentation from all of the project partners. It was a great day. Watch for early listings of our SteelDay events next year—bigger and better for sure.

LeJeune Bolt Visits SidePlate

LeJeune Bolt Company is a well-known name in the construction industry. With seemingly every bolt anyone could need, you would have thought they were busy enough—but that wasn’t the case. A few years back they brought the TNA bolt (Torque + Angle) system to the market and our office. Our R&D team found it interesting and made note of it.  Recently SidePlate conducted a massive testing exercise at UCSD Testing Lab that involved positioning a bi-axial field bolted connection design on an HSS column with an intent to fail four separate beams. By taking advantage of LeJeune’s TNA bolt and tool system, we were able to replace the beam each time by simply unbolting the connection. No torch, no chisels, simple unbolting.

We were so happy with the results and efficiency the bolts and installation tools provided, we invited Jeff Greene and Chad Larson from LeJeune to our office to fully explain the system to all of our engineers. Leading the Industry - One Conference at a Time

If you have never visited our Mission Viejo, California office, we wish you would. Because if you do visit with us, not only will you meet our amazing team of engineers, you will also meet Behzad Rafezy, our Director of Research and Development. Yes, we have in-house R&D that works on all of our Finite Element Analysis and plans and facilitates all of our testing. To that, Behzad was asked to present at the 5 th World Congress and Exhibition on Construction and Steel Structure. His work with our testing team to develop a paper on Seismic Lessons Learned from Full-Scale Testing of SidePlate Designs packed the room.  We are proud of our R&D Team and the great things they do and want our clients to know just how serious we take assuring our designs are safe and tested.

The Whistle: Are We Ready for the Big One? Our local PBS station KVCR / Empire Network PBS is producing a four-part TV series entitled, “The Whistle: Are we ready for the Big One?” Clearly this focuses on the volatile California earthquake climate, but really draws out the need for preparedness for many situations. SidePlate is a proud sponsor of the program and our work on the Loma Linda Hospital in Loma Linda, California is featured in episode two and interviews with our President Henry Gallart and founder David Houghton will take place in episode four.
