This is season to give thanks: the end of the year when we tally up our wins and losses, and we realize that we have so much to be thankful for each and every day. As I look back on the year for the AOASM (and beyond, for I gratefully have many years with our Academy), I find that we have come so very far indeed!
We are halfway through the year, and I’d like to bring you up to speed on where we stand with some of the goals I had for the AOASM this year:
- International and pre-medical membership within the AOASM – we have successfully created an international membership status and have had at least one member take this option. As we head into the new calendar year, I encourage you all to either join or renew your membership and consider using the convenience of the auto-renew feature to save yourself time in the future!
- The FAOASM update and FAOASM (dist) award – the committee assigned to this task has been working diligently and has a rough draft proposed for the updated guidelines for the FAOASM award. One hurdle we have yet to overcome in this process is finding a definition of a sports medicine physician that is distinct from physicians of other specialties who treat athletes, but recognizes that our membership is vast in scope and application of sports medicine. Once this and the FAOASM criteria are completed, they can define the FAOASM (dist) award!
- Expanding public awareness of osteopathic sports medicine through our continued superior education and advocacy – we are making several forays into this expansive goal!
- We’ve completed the editing and final draft for the new “AMSSM/AOASM Case Studies in Sports Medicine” textbook this month. I was happy to pen a combined forward with Chad Carlson (President, AMSSM) for this text this month, which combines the best case presentations from both our conferences into an "organized-by-anatomic-region and easy-to-learn-from format. We’ll be sure to let you know where you can find this unique book when it becomes available!
- Earlier this month, we also completed a thorough review and planning session for the “Sportsosteopathy” conferences in Germany which the AOASM supports through the DAAO. Things are going very well with this as a direct result of the dedication and talent of the multiple AOASM members who have taken part in this venture over the years!
- While attendance was down for all specialties and groups this year at the annual OMED conference, the AOASM remains a strongly-sought after partner in collaboration with other specialty groups going forward – thanks in no small part to Dr. Sampson’s strong work this fall. Our members also remain in high popularity with local and state groups for requests for workshops and lectures. If you’re interested in being one of the many who represent the AOASM when we get asked for our Speaker’s Bureau, please reach out to info@aoasm.org and let us know!
- I’m proud to share with you – in case you’d not already heard – that the AOASM role has been strengthened significantly within the JCSMS with the status of Bill Feldner, DO, FAOASM, to President-Elect and Rob Franks, DO, FAOASM, is co-chairing this year’s annual program for the JCSMS. We will have three lecturers presenting at this year’s conference!
- In last month’s newsletter I shared some of our advocacy work which focused on our specialty as well as national legislation. I’d also recognize the great work being done by Mary Solomon, DO, FAOASM, and Rance McClain, DO, FAOASM, for the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM.
And remember – all this work and achievement by our AOASM membership doesn’t include any of the daily (and nightly) work of treating our athlete-patients through the superior practice of osteopathic sports medicine that is the cornerstone of our existence. I’m sincerely overwhelmed at their/your accomplishments, speaking to the purpose and strength of the AOASM!
Finally, I would just like to briefly follow up on our informal survey from last month’s letter in regard to a recent letter published in
JAMA Internal Medicine
that found that among the 1,121 NCAA universities during the 2018-19 school year – only 11.2% of head team physicians and 31.7% of head team trainers were women. It remains my goal to work with Brian Hainline, MD (CMO for the NCAA), to help support equal opportunities for our osteopathic sports medicine physicians into roles of leadership within the NCAA. I encourage you to take the minute to
submit your situation this month.
(Whether you are an NCAA team physician or not, we need input from all members.) It’s a very short survey and would mean much to the AOASM!
Wishing you all a very happy holiday season for you and yours…be thankful and be blessed!
