The global pandemic has forced all of us to live, work, and learn differently. As osteopathic sports medicine physicians, this is our forte–to also think outside of the box and think differently. Thanks to our 2020 President, Dr. Bill Kuprevich, AOASM really focused its efforts to being a member-centered community.
AOASM has served as an engineer of opportunity to support members' mind, body, and spirit. AOASM continues to provide the "All Access" section of Sidelines for our members. The hope is to provide resources and encourage support to our members during the pandemic and help to safely transition back into our environments.
As we move out of the pandemic and get a breath of fresh air out from our facial coverings, let us revisit reconnecting with our health. One of our long-time and valued members, Dr. Naresh Rao, has been featured with the AOA to support getting our health back on track. He suggests we reassess, restructure, and revitalize our lives.
Mind: Reconnect with yourself. Find a few minutes out of the busy clinic or sports event schedule to be still. Continue mindful techniques such as meditative breathing and awareness. A great resource is yoga instructor, Kat Meffen, who teaches breathing techniques according to yoga practices. Click here for a 10-minute guided meditation with respiratory techniques.
Also, make time to take a break and plan that summer vacation or outing. Many studies cite vacations help to boost productivity but also makes people happier. Time away from the clinic or the team also helps to continue strong connection with loved ones. Dr. Vaina Manipod, D.O., psychiatrist, states the skill of relaxation can diminish if not used over time. She notes, “Vacations create perfect opportunities to break the cycle of chronic stress brought on by daily professional and personal responsibilities.” So, start planning that active vacation to help gain perspective, redevelop problem-solving skills, stimulate relaxation mode, and return to the clinic feeling happier and refreshed!
Body: These two important tips help to support the active body.
- Get out of hibernation and get the general physical back on track. Reconnect with your primary care physician for annual labs, diagnostic studies according to age, and also cancer screenings.
- Ease back into exercise. Dr. Naresh Rao suggests “prehabilitate” or strengthen and stretch to prevent injury. Get in touch with your osteopathic colleagues to get muscle energy techniques performed on your body or you can even perform some techniques on your own. This is a great way to stretch and improve range of motion.
Spirit: Let the sunshine in! As members ease back into exercise or make plans for summer vacation, make sure to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D with safe sun exposure. This can be done for 5-30 minutes in midday sun twice per week. Vitamin D is an important regulator of many bodily functions including cell growth, immune function, hormone balance, and inflammation reduction. We have been stuck inside on Zoom calls most of the year. Take a small break from SPF application and for 5-30 minutes each day get into the sun and experience the full benefits of vitamin D!

Basketball Sports Medicine and Science
|
|
This book is designed as a comprehensive educational resource, not only for basketball medical caregivers and scientists, but for all basketball personnel. Written by a multidisciplinary team of leading experts in their fields, it provides information and guidance on injury prevention, injury management, and rehabilitation for physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, rehabilitation specialists, conditioning trainers, and coaches. All commonly encountered injuries and a variety of situations and scenarios specific to basketball are covered with the aid of more than 200 color photos and illustrations. Basketball Sports Medicine and Science is published in collaboration with ESSKA and will represent a superb, comprehensive, educational resource. It is further hoped that the book will serve as a link between the different disciplines and modalities involved in basketball care, creating a common language, and improving communication within the team staff and environment.
