Greetings! |
Welcome to the July edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a warm and very pleasant summer's day here in the Bay Area. Welcome to the Summer Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a very warm and pleasant summer day here in the San Francisco Bay Area. So what is wrong with the picture? I should be getting burnt sitting on a beach, instead of writing this newsletter.
Our store is located in the downtown area of Los Gatos, popular with tourists. On any given day we hear 5-10 different languages in the store. Many have never seen a shop such as ours, and known about the hobby. We hope we are expanding the toy soldier hobby from our little corner of the world.
We thought you may like to read a recent article from Discover Maps, and read a little about Mike Steinrok, aka Kilted Vampire, who can currently be found during the week in our store. Mike not only helps in the store but does custom painting, and repairs for customers, makes dioramas, and gives painting demos.

A Place Called YALTA
In early 1945 American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill journeyed to the Crimean resort of Yalta to meet Soviet Russia's Joseph Stalin. Together these three men decided on the final progress of the war against Hitler's Third Reich and their own plans for post war Germany and the rest of Europe.
- DD106 -- The Big Three - The three seated leaders make a strong contrast in style ... Churchill, in his Royal Air Force uniform ebullient and confident ... Marshal Stalin, quiet and brooding in his Red Army uniform and ... Roosevelt, the sole "civilian" but wearing a U.S. Navy boat cloak.
This great little set commemorates the last time all three of these Allied leaders were to meet... Within a few months Roosevelt would die...Churchill would be voted out of office... Only "Uncle Joe" would remain!
A Place Called Yalta
Fields of Battle - Civilians
- FOB067 -- Mother & Daughter - A mother and daughter glance nervously upwards at the sound of approaching aircraft ... A scene that could be France in the summer of 1940... Britain during the Blitz of 1941... or even Germany from 1942 onwards. Another mini tableau of civilians caught in wartime.
- FOB068 -- Old Man & Wheel Barrow - A companion piece to the previous set... Pushing a few meager belongings all this man seeks is peace and safety.
- FOB070 -- Newspaper Seller #1 - Three individual versions of the same figure... Carrying newspaper banners telling three different stories.

Knights of the Black Cross
Last year when we released our first three Albatros bi planes the demand far out stripped the supply and so we decided to produce two more versions of this iconic German WWI aircraft. Unlike the first three these two new models include a seated pilot figure and are cast from a brand new mold.
- FW114 -- Albatross DV Uffz. Paul Baumer - This brightly-coloured machine is decorated with the "Edelweiss" mountain flower on both sides of the fuselage. Baumer flew this aircraft with Jagdstaffel 5, in June 1917 and by war's end in November 1918 had scored 43 victories and been awarded the coveted "Blue Max". He died in an air crash in 1927.
- FW115 -- Albatross DV Leut. Ernest Udet Jasta 37 - Ernst Udet, later to become a General in Hitler's Luftwaffe and a flying contemporary of Hermaun Goering, flew this smart silver-coloured Albatros while flying with Jasta 37 in the Autumn of 1917. By the end of hostilities his tally would be 62 "kills". Although promoted to General in World War Two his conflicts with the Nazi hierarchy drove him to commit suicide in 1941.
Flight Of Eagles
D.DAY Pioneer
- DD178 -- Major-General Percy Hobart - A fine "personality" figure of one of the "forgotten heroes" of D. Day. Percy Hobart devised and designed many of the specialized armoured vehicles that made the D. Day landings so successful. Here he is dressed in a classic British "duffel coat" and wearing a tank corps black beret. He also commanded the 79th. Armoured Division.
D-Day '44 - British and Canadian
PER ARDUA AD ASTRA
"Through adversity to the stars" is the motto of Britain's Royal Air Force and August is a bumper month for RAF releases.
- RAF041 -- Humber Heavy Utility - The second version of this classic British WW2 transport... this time in "RAF blue" with a female driver and roundel on the bonnet. A very familiar sight on wartime airfields.
- RAF042 -- Spitfire Mk. IX - This Mark IX Spitfire was reckoned by many pilots to be their favourite "Spit" to fly. It was also the most produced version of the 24 different kinds built during and after the war (over 9,000 Mk. IX's were manufactured).
But this Spitfire is also very special. It is in the markings of Wing Commander J.E. "Johnnie" Johnson, Britain's top-scoring ace of WW2 (34 "kills"). This K&C model is in D.Day markings and carries Johnson's own initials (J.E.J.) on the fuselage. In addition it also has the "maple leaf". Insignia as Johnnie was commanding the Canadian Spitfire Wing at that time. Just 300 are being made. - RAF043 -- Flight Lieutenant Bill Reid V.C. - On 3 November, 1943 F/Lieut. Reid. Captained Lancaster "O for Oscar" on a 600 bomber raid on Dusseldorf. While passing over Holland his aircraft was attacked by an Me.110 night fighter. Bill Reid was seriously wounded by shell fragments and the Lancaster badly damaged but still flyable. Bill and his crew pressed on to their target.
Over Germany they were again attacked...by a FW190 this time and two crew were fatally injured. Bill along with his flight engineer was wounded again and lost their compass. Still they continued the mission... and dropped their bombs exactly on target! On the route back to the U.K. their Lancaster encountered heavy flak over Holland but just managed to fly over the North Sea. Although losing power (on all four engines at one point) Bill Reid managed to restart them and make an emergency landing at an airfield in Norfolk. His badly shot up Lancaster just managed to touch ground before the undercarriage collapsed and it completed the arrival on its belly. For his courage, tenacity and leadership Bill Reid was awarded the Victoria Cross. This brave but modest Scot passed away in 2001. - RAF044 -- Air Vice Marshal Arthur "Bomber" Harris - "Bomber" Harris was the "architect" of the RAF's bombing offensive on Germany from 1942 until the end of the war in Europe. When Britain had no other way to hit back at the Germans Harris provided the leadership and the means.
- RAF045 -- RAF Airfield Tractor - These "David Brown" tractors were a fixture on most British airfields from the war years until well into the 1950's. Our distinctive version has the highly visible blue and yellow colour scheme and comes with a WRAF driver.
- RAF046 -- RAF Airfield Starter Cart - Yet another familiar wartime sight... This little starter cart is pulled by an RAF Aircraftsman (an ERK).
- RAF052 -- RAF Dispatch Rider - An RAF Police Dispatch Rider on a BSA Motorcycle.
- RAF053 -- Wing Commander J.E. Johnnie Johnson - James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson, C.B.E., D.S.O. & Two Bars, DFC & Bar was one of the RAF's most famous and decorated wartime pilots... His record of 34 "kills", 7"shared", 3"probables", 10"damaged", make him the highest scoring Western Ace against the Luftwaffe during WW2.
In March 1944 he was put in charge of 144 (RCAF) Wing and flew Spitfires over Normandy before, during and after the invasion. After the war he had a long and distinguished career in the RAF becoming an Air Vice Marshal. He passed away in 2001. The K&C figure has him "kitted-out" in RAF Battledress and wearing a "Mae-West" Life Vest and carrying a side arm just in case he has to bale out over enemy territory!

Traditional Chinese music to Western ears is definitely an acquired taste however with these three young ladies playing it the task becomes much more pleasant.

In Stock Now! Knights of the Skies
The Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 was a British biplane fighter aircraft of the First World War. Although the first examples reached the Western Front before the Sopwith Camel and it had a much better overall performance, problems with its Hispano-Suiza engine, particularly the geared-output H-S 8B-powered versions, meant that there was a chronic shortage of S.E.5s until well into 1918 and fewer squadrons were equipped with this type than with the Sopwith fighter. Together with the Camel, the S.E.5 was instrumental in regaining allied air superiority in mid-1917 and maintaining this for the rest of the war, ensuring there was no repetition of "Bloody April" 1917 when losses in the Royal Flying Corp were much heavier than in the Luftstreitkrfte
- ACE-008 -- S.E.5a D 276 No.74 Sqn. RAF, Spring 1918, Captain E. Mick Mannock.
- ACE-008P -- Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock VC, DSO and Two Bars, MC & Bar (24 May 1887 - 26 July 1918) - Mannock went into combat on the Western Front on three separate combat tours. Although initially a social misfit suspected of cowardice in his first assignment to 40 Squadron, he began to accumulate victories. He took on the highly hazardous task of balloon busting for his first aerial victory, and by dogged concentration on his gunnery skills, tallied 15 victories by the end of his first combat tour.
After two months back in England, he returned to France as a Flight Commander in the fledgling 74 Squadron. He amassed 36 more victories between 12 April and 17 June 1918. He was one of the world's first theorists of aviation tactics, and was renowned for his prudent but aggressive leadership in the air. By the time he rose to command of 85 Squadron, his subordinates boasted that he never lost a wingman. Mannock won the Military Cross twice, was one of the rare three-time winners of the Distinguished Service Order, and would be posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He is regarded as one of the greatest fighter pilots of the war. - ACE-BP -- British Pilots - Two new British pilot figures which are designed to fit the Sopwith Camels (ACE-04, and ACE-10). These figures will also be compatible with the SE-5a, and Nieuport 17's. Since similar flying equipment and jackets were used by both sides during the war, these two figures will also be able to be displayed with the German models.
Knights Of The Skies - WWI
Jacobite Rebellion
The Royal Ecossais was raised in 1744 and discharged in 1752. Their officers were Scots and Irish, often exiled Jacobites, and the soldiers were of many European nationalities, including Scots, Irish and English. The regiment was raised by Lord John Drummond and was a regiment of Scots mercenaries in French service. The French supported Prince Charles Edward Stewart and supplied troops which were sent to Scotland to support the rebellion. The French ship L'Esperance' was captured by the Royal Navy on 25 November 1745, it was on her way to Scotland to support the Jacobite Rebellion. Only 300 French troops were to arrive in Scotland , and were present at the Battle of Culloden.

Raid on Saint Francis, 1759
There are no surviving Rogers Ranger uniforms from this period. Descriptions do exist, and most coats seem to have been based on the basic pattern of 1750's era British jackets, with certain changes. The main change being the removal of the regimental lacing, which proved unsuitable for wilderness warfare as it would easily get caught up in the undergrowth. Apart from the standard issue coat, an early attempt to provide an uniform for the rangers was the easily constructed "square" or "box frock". This was a simple linen tunic which was designed to pull over the head, and would reach down to the knees.

Peninsular War 1807-1814
Caadores was Portuguese for "huntsmen", these were the elite light infantry of the Portuguese Army during the Peninsular War. They were referred by Lord Wellington, as the "fighting cocks" of his Anglo-Portuguese Army. One of the most distinctive features of the Caadores was their famous brown uniform . The brown uniform was chosen as a form of camouflage, considered more appropriate to the dry lands of the Iberian Peninsula than the traditional green uniforms used by the light infantry of most other countries in Europe. During the Peninsular War, Caadores became especially notable in the performance of marksmanship at long distances. 1st and 3rd Cazadores had the highest level of training. They were indoctrinated with British battalions and formed part of the famous "Light Division" of Major General Robert "Black Bob" Craufurd. Both battalions are unquestionably the most famous Portuguese battalions. They were trained by British officers and were the equivalent of the 95th rifles.

The Renault Type AG, or better known today as Taxi de la Marne (Marne's Taxi) was an automobile manufactured between 1905 and 1910 by Renault and was the first Parisian taxicab. The name Taxi de la Marne was not used until the outbreak of World War I, when the fleet of Paris' taxis were requisitioned by the French Army to transport troops from Paris to the First Battle of the Marne, early September 1914. It was not uncommon for civilian transportation to be used to ferry pilots and crew around the local area. Initially, they would also be used to fetch pilots who had been forced to land away from the official airfield. Picture of Prototype of Taxi and Driver. Taxi Driver will be sold separately.
Also for the Knights Of The Skies Series, two Aircraft hanger facades. Both buildings will have separate numbers, so those wishing to create a row of Hangers numbered 1, 2 and 3 can do so. The first of these buildings should be available as an October release. The second should be released the following month.

New Announcement Expected In August! American Civil War - Confederate 13th Alabama
As part of Archer's Brigade, the13th Alabama was heavily engaged on day 1 one of the Battle of Gettysburg against the Iron Brigade around McPherson's Woods. They are credited for having been one of the possible regiments to have shot and killed Union General John Reynolds. Though the figures are designed as the 13th Alabama, they can serve well as many different Confederate Regiments and the figures will mix and match quite well with other Confederate figures that we have previously or will release.
For space reasons we have not individually listed the figures, but all can be viewed by visiting our Confederate 13th Alabama Page
