Update on the Greek Community and Government Relations
After many high-profile hazing deaths, a new coalition is forming between parents, the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) to address the dangers of hazing. This is the first time the Conferences have partnered with the families of those affected by hazing to bring about culture change. The first action to come out of this partnership is an announcement by the NIC that no drinks that contain more than 15 percent alcohol by volume (15% ABV) can be present in any fraternity facility or at any fraternity event by September 1, 2019, unless served by a licensed and insured third-party vendor, effectively banning hard liquor from fraternity events. While the elimination of liquor from fraternity events will not alone eliminate the poor choices students make that lead to hazing, we applaud this policy change as a step toward eliminating hazing from the culture of Greek Life and we look forward to partnering and supporting the efforts of this new group as it continues its work.

With advocacy efforts started in the spring, we continue to follow and support the strengthening of language in the PROSPER Act, legislation currently in Congress that, among other provisions, would prevent colleges and universities from receiving federal dollars if they penalize members of single-gender social groups. This is in response to the decision by Harvard University to bar members of single-gender final clubs and Greek organizations from holding student group leadership positions, varsity athletic team captaincies, and from receiving College endorsement for prestigious fellowships. Sigma Delta Tau members benefit from the opportunity to join a single-sex organization and we will work hard to ensure future students can be afforded the same opportunity.

SDT is excited to partner with our friends across badges in both the NIC and NPC to work toward strengthening and protecting our Greek community. If you are interested in learning more about our government relations work or have a connection in state or federal government, please reach out to our Government Relations Chair, Leslie Herman [email protected] .
Sisters,

Fall is finally here! We've been very excited watching many of our chapters welcome new sisters for the past few weeks. Did you know we welcome nearly 2,500 new members each year? Keep an eye on our social media, @SDTsorority, and follow your chapter, to join in the celebration!

If there is a Day of Service activity in your area, I hope you'll reach out to the group and join. If not, I hope you find some time during the weekend to remember your sisterhood experience and perhaps do something in honor of that. The SDT Foundation would also appreciate your support!
