How Seattle-Area Small Businesses

Can Prepare for the World Cup

There’s a reason why cities compete to host popular festivals, tournaments, and tours: Major live events create a “halo effect” that extends beyond the event itself, boosting local economies and benefiting surrounding businesses.

This is why the U.S. made two bids over the last decade to host the FIFA World Cup, ultimately winning the right to host the FIFA World Cup 2026 alongside Canada and Mexico. With Seattle hosting six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in June and July, including two knockout stage matches, the economic impact of the world’s most popular sport will be felt across the state.

We will see a boost of media attention and a rise in regional and international tourism to the city. King County is expected to benefit from a projected economic impact of more than $929 million from these matches, including an expectation of more than $100 million in direct state and local tax revenue and creating more than 20,000 full-time and part-time jobs. For entrepreneurs and small businesses, this presents a golden opportunity to connect with visiting soccer fans, expand visibility to new audiences, and build lasting community connections with local residents. It’s exciting to see how soccer will bring people together to celebrate across different countries, diverse cultures, and all walks of life to share in the passion and joy of the sport.

Here are three ways that small businesses can prepare, plan, and benefit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 coming to our community.

What the Supreme Court Decision on Tariffs Means for Small Business

Published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, February 23, 2026

Photo Courtesy of U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Last week’s long-awaited Supreme Court tariff ruling, which struck down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), has significant ramifications for the U.S. economy and small businesses, in particular.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley breaks down the recent Supreme Court decision on tariffs and its implications for businesses.

Bradley explained that the Supreme Court determined it was illegal to use the IEEPA to impose tariffs. While other tariff authorities, such as Section 301 (country-specific tariffs) and Section 232 (product-specific tariffs on items like steel, aluminum, and lumber), remain unaffected, the global tariffs imposed under IEEPA are now nullified. These tariffs, which ranged from 10% to 50%, are no longer in effect.

However, soon after the Supreme Court decision was announced, the administration quickly moved to reinstate tariffs using different legal mechanisms. Bradley noted that while these new tariffs are temporary, they create uncertainty for businesses, as the administration has indicated it will use the next 150 days to investigate and potentially impose tariffs under other authorities.

Workplace Rights: Common Mistakes to Avoid

A big workplace right for employees is the protection provided to them through workers’ compensation coverage (workers’ comp). Workers’ comp is mandatory for all employees and even some contractors. Check out RCW 51.12.020 for the state law explaining which types of employment are excluded from coverage. Here are a few answers to my workers’ comp FAQs:

  • How do I set up workers’ comp?
  • Update your WA state business license with the Department of Revenue (DOR) Business Licensing Service and indicate you are going to have employee(s). For help, follow these steps.

  • Where do I find my…?
  • Are you looking for a certificate of coverage? Your account manager? Maybe rates and risk classes or your L&I account ID? You can find all of that using the Verify Tool. However, if you’re looking for your Participant Activation Code (PAC), you’ll want to call your account manager or give us a call at: 1-800-987-0145.

  • Can my payroll company or other third party file for me?
  • Yes. Be sure you and the service provider review “Filing on Behalf of Clients” to find an option that fits. But, beware! While payroll companies can file workers’ comp quarterly reports on your behalf, it’s not always the case! Be sure to verify directly with the payroll company to confirm if that’s a service they provide. Otherwise, you risk accruing late fees.

  • Is coverage required for business owners?
  • No. Most business owners are exempt from mandatory coverage per RCW 51.12.020, even if you pay yourself as an employee in a S-Corp or other structure. However, owners can opt into elective coverage and receive workers’ comp benefits such as medical care coverage related to a workplace injury and partial wage replacement if your workplace injury results in you missing three or more consecutive work days.

Why Volunteer Recruitment Breaks Down

and What Nonprofit Leaders Can Do

Published in NonprofitPRO, January 16, 2026

Photo: Pexels/Anna Shvets

Volunteers are a tremendous resource for nonprofits. Without this vital support, many organizations could not provide programs, deliver services, raise funds, or carry out governance through board service. Effective volunteer recruitment; however, requires more than goodwill — it depends on leadership, capacity, and intentional program design.

The Impact of a Volunteer

Recent AmeriCorps and U.S. Census Bureau data shows that between September 2022 and September 2023, 28.3% — or more than 75.7 million — of Americans reported volunteering through an organization. While this reflects a rebound from pandemic lows, participation remains below pre-pandemic levels. Notably, as participation has increased, the average number of hours served per volunteer has declined, underscoring the shift toward flexible and episodic volunteering that many nonprofit leaders now confront.

One example of this reliance on volunteer services is The Salvation Army Indiana Division. One annual program alone, Coats for Kids, involves acquiring and distributing thousands of coats, hats, scarves, and gloves to children in need — an effort requiring hundreds of volunteers.

The Salvation Army, like many nonprofits nationwide, cannot afford to pay for these services. Yet volunteers are not free. While they are unpaid, they require real investment in staff time, coordination, and management to be effective. In fact, the current estimated value of each volunteer hour is $34.79. The goal is to recruit volunteers well and retain them each year. Nonprofits need volunteers to survive.

Bremerton World Cup Fan Site

Announces Lineup of Events

With just months to go before the FIFA World Cup arrives in North America and six games slated for downtown Seattle, the schedules and details of eight "Fan Zone" events in Bremerton's Quincy Square have been announced.

The Bremerton Fan Zone is one of nine locations across the state named as official sites to gather during the event, which kicks off when Mexico hosts South African on June 11 in Mexico City. Games will be played in 16 cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico, including Seattle, where four group-stage and two knock-out round games will be played, including the U.S. men's national team hosting Australia on June 19.

The Quincy Square site, at Fourth Street and Washington Avenue, just a few blocks from the ferry terminal, will be turned into a large public area for watching games that happen in Seattle as well as a few bonus events. The Fan Zone is scheduled to feature a 20-foot LED outdoor screen set up at the new bandstand along Fourth Street, an outdoor beer garden, food trucks and certain themed days that will function as community events beyond just soccer.

"These events are intentionally designed to be immersive, high-energy, and welcoming," Jessica Combs, Executive Director of the Downtown Bremerton Association, said in a statement. "By combining global sport with local programming and partnerships, we’re creating experiences that feel authentic to Bremerton while welcoming the world."
