MedWish helps to re-purpose discarded medical supplies, and our volunteers help with this process. We collect tens of thousands of pounds of donated supplies each month and rely on volunteers to help us sort through these supplies, checking expiration dates and ensuring product viability.

Sorting takes place through a number of different steps, and volunteers can expect to participate in all steps of the process (examples include sorting medical supplies into categories, matching similar items together, boxing, and labeling inventory).

No medical experience is necessary!

Celebrate and Honor Black History Month: JCU DEIB Events!

Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States since the Jim Crow Era, and officially recognized in 1976 on the nation's bicentennial, as a way to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices that African Americans have made.

Each year, Black History Month has a new theme, and this year's theme is "Black Resistance." The theme comes at a time when the nation has become politically charged around issues of race. As LaGarrett King, associate professor at the University of Buffalo explains, "resistance helps us understand the power that Black people have in terms of their historical realities, which counters the concept of victimhood that many say drives Black History education."

In order to celebrate Black History Month, consider how this year's theme resonates with you. What have you learned or been prevented from learning about the historical experiences of Black Americans? How have we made strides as a nation to remove barriers and oppression, and where do we still need to grow and change?

If you are interested in learning more, check out some of these resources: NPR, Center for Racial Justice, and events sponsored by JCU DEIB.

Events Sponsored by JCU DEIB:

Volunteer Opportunity this Summer with PALS Program!

PALS creates inclusive camp experiences for people with and without Down syndrome. Our volunteer-led programs change attitudes, transform lives, and inspire a world of belonging. PALS will be in Cleveland at JCU's campus from July 9-July 15 this year!

For 7 days and 6 nights, PALS participants engage in unique on-campus activities, explore the local sights, and experience life on a college campus – all the while building transformative, lifelong friendships and learning the true meaning of inclusion.

Our volunteers support our mission of building a world of belonging by leading week-long programs, building communities in our regional locations, and welcoming new participants to PALS!

The most common role at PALS is our 1-1 match where a peer without Down syndrome is paired with an individual with Down syndrome.

To be a Peer Participant, you are required to be high school age (approximately 15) and older.

Volunteer leaders are required to be 18 and older. Applications are open!

Because of my service-learning experience, I am more interested in learning about professions involving children. At Marion Sterling, these students are learning the basics of reading and writing and most days, they become down on themselves and think they are not capable of achieving the task. After working with the student for that daily thirty-minute session, or after the whole semester is over, it is truly heartwarming to see how much improvement they have made and how different they act. From the first day I meet my students for the semester, until the last day of tutoring, I am able to see the growth not only in their educational capabilities but most importantly their social development with me and their personal growth as well.

Not many things impact the way I view the experiences I get with the kids at the local schools, but those specific one-on-one experiences with the individual students impact the way I view the world every day. The bonds that have been created through my service placement this semester at Marion Sterling with these students are some I will truly never forget.

I ask myself and think all the time if teaching students is something I am born to do. The interactions I have with students make me question what I want to spend my life doing, or even a portion of it. Because of the various experiences with these kids, I know I will find a way to incorporate children into my profession, in whatever way possible.
