Volunteer Spotlight: Al Buccholz
Al Buccholz, also known as “the tool guy,” volunteers primarily at our Lynnwood Habitat Store and helps occasionally at the Everett Habitat Store.

Al is a longtime Habitat volunteer, having served at Port Huron Habitat in Michigan for approximately 16 years prior to moving to Snohomish County. In Michigan, Al volunteered occasionally on the build site for about 10 years leading up to his retirement. After retiring, Al drove the donations truck nearly full time for six years. In 2011, Port Huron Habitat awarded Al “Volunteer of the Year.” He began volunteering at Habitat Snohomish in 2012 after he moved to Lynnwood. Since 2012, Al has given more than 3,000 hours to our organization.
“Al is always friendly and he knows so much about Habitat and its mission,” Lynnwood Habitat Store Manager Anita Sims said. “We look forward to having him here every Wednesday and Friday and truly appreciate his dedication to our organization.”
Some of Al’s volunteer duties include identifying tools and pricing each one according to its condition. In addition to his knowledge about tools, Al brings many valuable skills to our organization from his education and career. Al has a doctorate in chemistry and worked as both a Technical Director and Vice President for several companies, spending 17 years of his career at 3M developing tapes and coatings. He has extensive knowledge in paint mixing and has advised our store staff and customers on paint.

“I enjoy volunteering at Habitat,” Al said. “It gives a little structure to retired life, but not too much.”

Beyond his regular volunteer duties, Al goes above and beyond by taking Styrofoam, cardboard and other tough-to-recycle items to the local recycling station on a regular basis.

“He is a marvel,” Anita said. “We are so thankful he gives his time to the Habitat Store.”
