Significant Storm Coming this Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Yucca Valley and the surrounding Morongo Basin starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 19th through 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 21st. Tropical Storm Hilary has been upgraded to a hurricane and is expected to hit Southern California with significant rainfall this weekend. The National Weather Service predicts that Yucca Valley and the surrounding Morongo Basin could receive 2 – 4 inches of rain, with some areas getting much more. This storm is changing daily, so keep current on weather forecasts by visiting www.weather.gov.

The Town of Yucca Valley is preparing for this storm and residents are advised to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel when possible. The Town Street Department is preparing to respond to emergencies, but all local motorists should be alert to the adverse conditions with wet and flooding roadways. Depending on the storm severity, access to some local roads may be limited. Town resources will be directed to clearing primary roadways first. Sandbags are available for residents to pick up at the following locations:

  • Town’s Public Works Facility, located at 58928 Business Center Drive, Yucca Valley (sand available too) – limit of 20 per household.
  • Fire Station #41, located at 57201 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Yucca Valley - limit of 10 per household.
  • Fire Station #42, located at 58612 Aberdeen Drive, Yucca Valley - limit of 10 per household.
  • Fire Station #36, located at 6715 Park Blvd., Joshua Tree - limit of 10 per household.

The Town encourages drivers to slow down and drive safely during storm events, and to avoid major wash channels when flowing water is present. Remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”. As the ability to travel may be reduced over the next few days, residents are also reminded to keep a supply of necessary provisions and medications on hand. Be sure to bring pets inside. Never use generators, outdoor heating or cooking equipment indoors. If driving is necessary, be sure to keep disaster supplies in your vehicle.
