Library Chooses Deputy Director

After an extensive nationwide search, the Berkeley Public Library announced the arrival of Henry Bankhead as the Library’s new Deputy Director. Henry will provide leadership for major operational areas, including public services, collections, IT, and facilities.

Bankhead was the Assistant Director of Library & Recreation and City Librarian in San Rafael. Inspired by theatrical improv, he's worked with staff teams to implement improvisational techniques to improve public service and help test solutions to challenging customer interactions. He helped open the award-winning Los Gatos Library in 2012 and implemented many innovations through creative staff collaborations. A Stanford University undergraduate with a degree in Anthropology, he also has an MFA in painting from San Francisco Art Institute and a Masters in Library and Information Science from San Jose State.

“We are thrilled to have such an experienced leader join our team,” notes Tess Mayer, Director of Library Services. “Henry brings robust public services experience, technical acumen, and most importantly, a consideration of staff expertise and perspectives.”
