Location: Drop off at 1160 Kern Avenue, Sunnyvale.
Ages: All ages can participate
Time Commitment: Varies
With the help of over 2,500 volunteers each year, Sunnyvale Community Services is able to provide emergency food and financial assistance to low-income, hard-working families who are struggling with the high cost of living in Silicon Valley. One way you and your family can help is by joining their efforts to distribute food by double bagging the brown bags that hold food. Click here to learn how to double bags. This can be done at home or onsite as a group. They also organize youth group grocery packs. The group grocery pack is an assembly line-style pack that’s a great team-building activity. They ask for a minimum of 10 volunteers with a two-hour commitment. If you are interested in arranging a group grocery pack or double bagging brown bags, please contact Gabe Jaurequi. Create a Monarch Habitat
Monarch Defenders
Date/Time(s): Flexible, on your own schedule
Location: Your own container or yard
Ages: All ages can help
Time Commitment: Varies
The majestic monarch butterfly is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. But don't despair - you and your family can help! Monarchs only lay their eggs on milkweed, so they need this plant to reproduce. In addition, the adults need the nectar of a variety of flowering plants. Unfortunately, they don't have enough of either. You can help them by creating a small habitat of milkweed and pollinator plants. The Monarch Defenders website provides all the information you’ll need to establish your monarch-friendly garden. You can then upload information on your garden to an interactive map on the website to become a Monarch Defender.

California Native Garden Foundation was established with the mission to inform and educate the public, particularly youth, about gardening with native plants. They focus on ways that we can build food security and sovereignty in communities while restoring our environment and giving youth the skills needed for a sustainable future. One of their many programs is called ELSEE, which has served the community as a resource and destination for school field trips, classes, and ecological summer camps. They are in search of garden volunteers to help on Saturdays with maintenance and learning more about native plants, ecosystems, and the importance of sustainable agriculture in combating climate change. Be sure to dress for gardening, bring a hat and water. If you have your own tools/gloves you are welcome to bring them, as there is a limited supply of clippers and hand trowels. Families can also volunteer at Hester Farms to help harvest produce on Saturday mornings! Click here to learn more about their other volunteer programs.

Location: Varies
Ages: Families with ages five and older are welcome to participate.
Time Commitment: One and one-half to two hours per task
Heart of the Valley Services for Seniors is a nonprofit, all-volunteer-based organization helping seniors 65 years or older in West Santa Clara Valley by offering services and programs which help them maintain their independence. They are in search of volunteers to join the program and help seniors in the community. Some services you may sign up to provide include gardening, friendly visitor or phone caller, handy/fix-it person, shopping and errands, etc. The first step is to fill out the online volunteer application. The second step is the volunteer vetting process and volunteer orientation. After completing this step, you will have access to their volunteer portal. Different requests from seniors will be posted, where you can then accept the task of your choosing. On the volunteer portal, you will also be able to see the location and can choose tasks that may be closer and more convenient for you. After you accept a request, you have access to client information and contacts. You can communicate with the client and discuss moving around dates/times if you need. You can accept as many or as few tasks as you would like. Because most clients are 85+ they ask that you continue to social distance and wear a mask if you are around clients.
