Karen Brill: Educator, Leader, and Our Local Hero of the Month

Karen Brill, our Local Hero of the Month, has lived in Boynton Beach for over 32 years and has been a tireless advocate for public education, especially for students with disabilities. Elected to the Palm Beach County School Board in 2010, she brings more than 28 years of experience in education policy at both the local and state levels.

Karen’s advocacy is also deeply personal—she is the mother of a son living with autism, which has fueled her unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for all exceptional students.

A graduate of Leadership Florida and Florida’s Partners in Policymaking, Karen has served on numerous education committees, including chairing the School District’s ESE Advisory Committee and leading the Exceptional Student Education Coalition. She played a key role in shaping policies that support inclusive education and access to diplomas for students with disabilities.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County and is active in several civic and professional organizations. Karen earned her MBA from Palm Beach Atlantic University and enjoyed a successful career in business and real estate before joining the School Board. She is an award-winning Realtor with The Keyes Company.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Twenty-four years of love, partnership, and mutual support—what a beautiful testament to the bond shared by Bruce Silver and Nicole Silver. Our heartfelt congratulations!

Florida Raises the Bar for New Drivers

House Bill 889 significantly changes the educational requirements for obtaining a learner's driver license in Florida. The bill eliminates the current four-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course requirement for learner's permit applicants. It replaces it with a more comprehensive semester-long driver education course. This new course must be approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and meet or exceed the standards of the Department of Education's Driver Education/Traffic Safety-Classroom course.

The legislation maintains the TLSAE course requirement for driver license applicants who are 18 years or older, unless they have already been licensed in another jurisdiction or have completed a Department of Education driver education course. The semester-long course covers extensive topics including Florida driving laws, graduated driver licensing requirements, vehicle control procedures, defensive driving strategies, sharing the road with vulnerable users, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving performance.

The bill passed the Florida House with overwhelming support (112-0) and was approved by the Governor on May 30, 2025. It will take effect on July 1, 2025. This change represents a shift toward more comprehensive driver education for young drivers, requiring them to complete a full semester of instruction rather than just a four-hour course before obtaining their learner's permit.

At Silver Injury Law We Have Been Known to Walk "The Last Mile"

At Silver Injury Law we've been known to walk the "last mile" for our clients meaning that, when liability is uncertain or disputed, we will literally walk the "last mile" on the roadway before an accident happened so that we can see what the other motorist should have seen but didn't. We are mindful that, while we will move on to the next case, our clients only have one case so we conduct our own investigations to turn over every stone so that Justice can be allowed to prevail. Absolutely nobody is as thorough as me and my team in our pursuit of justice. - Bruce Silver Esq.
