Local Hero of the Month: Allison Santiago – Turning Grief into Action for a Safer Community

In the heart of our community, heroes don’t always wear capes — sometimes, they use their voices as their superpower. This month, we honor Allison as our Local Hero of the Month for her unwavering advocacy and tireless efforts to make our roads safer and protect other families from experiencing the same heartbreak that changed her life forever.

Allison’s world was turned upside down when her beloved daughter, Alexis, was tragically lost in a car crash on a notoriously dangerous curve along State Road 60 (SR 60). Alexis, a bright and ambitious college student, was on her way back to school when the accident occurred. The loss was devastating — not only to Allison, but to everyone who knew and loved Alexis.

But in the face of unimaginable grief, Allison chose not to remain silent. Instead, she turned her pain into purpose. Driven by love for her daughter and a desire to prevent further tragedies, Allison began advocating for changes to be made to that treacherous stretch of SR 60. Her mission was clear: no other family should have to endure the loss she had suffered because of preventable road hazards.

Through petitions, community meetings, and persistent outreach to local and state officials, Allison became a powerful voice for change. Her courage and determination captured the attention of lawmakers and transportation officials alike. Thanks to her efforts, the state has now committed to a series of critical safety upgrades to the area where Alexis lost her life.

Planned improvements include:

  • Replacing the old, ineffective rumble strips with safer, more responsive ones
  • Installing additional lighting to improve nighttime visibility
  • Putting up new signage to better alert drivers approaching the curve
  • Adding beacons and warning lights to ensure the hazardous section of road can no longer be ignored

These changes, while they cannot bring Alexis back, are a testament to the enduring bond between a mother and her daughter — and to Allison’s incredible strength in transforming tragedy into tangible change.

Allison’s story is a reminder of the power one person can have when they speak out, push forward, and fight for what’s right. Her advocacy is saving lives, and her love for Alexis continues to shine a light on a road that was once too dark.

We thank you, Allison, for your courage, your compassion, and your commitment to our community. You are truly our Local Hero of the Month — and an inspiration to us all.

In Loving Memory of Alexis Santiago.

Your spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved you.

Dori Saves Lives and Silver Injury Law Deliver Powerful Traffic Safety Presentation at Donna Klein Jewish Academy

In a dedicated effort to promote safer roads and empower young people with life-saving knowledge, Dori Saves Lives, in collaboration with Silver Injury Law, hosted a special traffic safety presentation at Donna Klein Jewish Academy.

The event was part of an ongoing community outreach initiative to educate students about the critical importance of responsible driving and pedestrian awareness.

During the presentation, students were engaged in an interactive and impactful program that highlighted the real-world consequences of distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and failure to follow traffic laws.

Through powerful personal stories, eye-opening statistics, and practical safety tips, the presenters emphasized how everyday decisions behind the wheel—or even as a passenger or pedestrian—can have life-altering consequences.

DeSantis Vows to Oppose Repeal of Florida’s ‘Free Kill’ Law

Governor Ron DeSantis has pledged to oppose the repeal of Florida’s controversial “Free Kill” law, HB 6017, which recently passed through the state legislature. The bill aims to overturn a provision of the Florida Wrongful Death Act that currently bars parents of adult patients who die due to medical malpractice from pursuing damages.

Originally enacted to reduce risks for medical providers and attract more physicians to Florida, thereby lowering healthcare costs, the law has long faced intense criticism from grieving families and patient advocacy groups. For years, loved ones who lost family members to medical negligence have fought tirelessly to change what many called an unjust and outdated policy—one that effectively placed a lesser value on the lives of unmarried adults without children.

After numerous failed attempts over the years, the Florida Legislature has finally listened. In a monumental shift, lawmakers passed HB 6017, signaling a long-overdue acknowledgment of the pain and frustration endured by countless families who were denied their day in court. This legislative victory marks a powerful moment for those who have spoken out, held vigils, met with lawmakers, and shared heartbreaking stories in an effort to bring justice and accountability to the healthcare system.

While DeSantis expresses sympathy for families affected by medical malpractice, he argues that repealing the law would significantly increase insurance premiums. As a result, he remains committed to opposing HB 6017, prioritizing what he sees as the financial stability of healthcare providers over expanding the rights of families to seek legal redress.

Nonetheless, the passage of the bill represents a significant step forward for advocates, who see it as a validation of their years-long struggle. For many, it’s not just a policy change—it’s a recognition that the lives of their loved ones matter, and that their voices have finally been heard in the halls of power.
