"Close Encounters of
the Seventh Kind"

Worship this Sunday

Most of us have probably seen something about “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” The movie was released in 1977. But I am proposing that we consider Close Encounters of the Seventh Kind. Why seventh? What are they? Why might they be important to us?

If your curiosity is aroused, just come Sunday to find out!

Blessings,
Paul Burkhart
If you are unable to join us in-person this Sunday, click on the video
above for Sunday's online worship service at 11:00 am.
General
Summer Worship
Worship will continue in the Meeting House at 11 am and on Sunday, August 8th, we will return to 2 services. There is one exception and that is on Sunday, August 22nd. On that day our Annual Hymn Sing Sunday will be outside at 11 am, followed by our Annual Picnic. Let us worship God and give thanks for all our blessings!

Welcome our new Audio and Worship Technologies Specialist
Join us in welcoming Ryan Edwards as our part-time employee for audio and worship technologies. Ryan’s responsibilities will include: live-streaming worship services to YouTube, handling the sound system, putting together The Gathering’s slide-show, and training volunteers.
Ryan has a Bachelor of Music with Emphasis in Technology from the University of Maryland. He currently provides technical operation and support for on-campus events, both in-person and virtual for Hagerstown Community College; and occasionally designs and operates live sound and projection for various community and professional theater performances. His work at SSPC will augment his current jobs.
As we welcome Ryan Edwards, we need to give a tremendous thank-you to Chris Kavulich, our IT Committee Chair. Chris devoted significant time researching and setting-up our online streaming capability. SSPC would not be Zooming or providing virtual worship without the total commitment of Chris to this technology ministry. Chris has also trained a few dedicated volunteers to whom we are and will continue to be indebted.
Summer All-Church Picnic on Hymn Sing Sunday, August 22
Please reserve Sunday, August 22 for the Summer All-Church Picnic following the Hymn Sing service that starts at 11 am. Your fun-loving Fellowship Committee will be serving up a buffet line of summer favorites, along with ice cream for dessert.

There is no cost for the event, but you need to sign-up.  A sign-up booklet is in the Gathering Place and you can also sign-up online (click HERE for online registration through Realm). Please indicate your choice of meat for each member of your family: BBQ Sandwich, Grilled Cheese Dog, or Vegan Sausage, so we can prepare enough food. The buffet line will be in the gym, but the picnic is planned for outdoors, so bring your lawn chair.  The picnic will be held rain or shine. Please join us!

Creation Care Sunday starts August 1.
Creation Care Sunday is sponsored by Presbyterians for Earth Care and is the first Sunday in the 'Creation Care Buffet' conference to make us more aware of the Climate Crisis. There are several well-known speakers, Bible study and music. The following 2 Sundays, August 8 & 15 are also included. Registration can be for one or all sessions.

Wednesday Men's Breakfast
The Wednesday men's breakfast group meets at the Peppermill Restaurant at 8:00 am each week. Please feel free to join us.

Flower Ministry
There are two chancel flowers available this Sunday to pick up after the 11 am service and take to a friend or loved one who needs encouragement. This is FREE of charge! Look for the flowers in the Gathering Place, under the TV screen. Please check the flower sign-up sheet on the table by the flowers to make sure no one has already requested to take them on Sunday. Please consider signing up to donate the flowers for a specific Sunday - the sign-up sheet is hanging on the bulletin board outside the church office. Thank you!
