I think it's fair to say that in 2017, we all spend a fair amount of time with our electronic devices.  My smartphone provides resources, organization and the ability to work from almost anywhere.  If you're like me, you also use it for games, social media and other extra-time activities that could be considered "wasting time".

Recently, I have a renewed interest in looking for more educational and productive uses of my electronic devices to fill this time.  Here are a couple of ideas.
  • Free books from the public library.  With a library card and the app "OverDrive" you can check out thousands of books.
  • I recently started a trial of "Kindle Unlimited".  There are millions of books included and many that kids find enjoyable with current characters (Pokemon, Star Wars, etc).
  • A number of our classes use spelling city, it's always a good way to spend 10 minutes.
  • Check out Khan Academy for math.  There are lessons for every grade and interactive problems.
  • Our students have taken an interest in coding.  Here is a link with 7 good options.  https://www.edutopia.org/blog/7-apps-teaching-children-coding-anna-adam

I hope this list gives you some fresh ideas.  Shabbat shalom.

Kindergarten General Studies
Mrs. Kate Carpenter

As January draws to a close, Kindergarten students are looking forward to celebrating the 100th Day of School. We have been faithfully building numbers to 100 ever since the first day of school, using 100's charts, 10 frames, and popsicle sticks.  On February 2, we'll watch
"The Mouse and the Motorcycle" and have a super fun 100's party!

Since early December we have had interactive phonics lessons several times a week, and students have mastered 40 sight words! On Tuesdays and Wednesdays we put these skills together during our "Kid Writing" sessions. We are very fortunate to have five dedicated volunteers who come to our class each week to help us publish original fiction and nonfiction stories! Our Drawing & Writing Books will be on display during the Open House on February 9.

Middle School Hebrew
Morah Alla Fligelman

In middle school Hebrew class, students have become hotel managers! They have learned all about hotels...the facilities, locations, what services they offer, as well as conversations from the viewpoint of the managers and guests. Their learning was through a variety of fun activities. They practiced phone conversations, such as making reservations as a guest and answering questions as a manager. As a project, they created a brochure advertising their "own" hotel located in Israel. Then each student's hotel was reviewed "on line" by their peers. Finally, each student presented their hotel before a "board of investors", (the students named this group "sharks"). After a question and answer session, the board decided if the hotel was a worthy investment. Wow, what a fun project with so much new Hebrew vocabulary!
