 For many weeks, you have seen the "Writing Workshop - Parent Cafe" being advertised in the Silver Summary. I want to extend an invitation to everyone, not just our current parents, to join us this Monday
evening.
At The Silver Academy, we take our writing instruction very seriously, and it shows! Displayed on our hallway bulletin boards are creative, expressive and informative pieces of writing that our students create. Inside the classroom you will find students' bound, published books, complete with illustrations.
During the Writing Workshop, Mrs. Wenzelburger and Mrs. Hurley will dive deeper into the writing process. Visitors will even have an opportunity to try the techniques on their own. P

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Kindergarten General Studies
One of the four peace-keeping concepts that we learn in Kindergarten is "We are all human beings. We are similar, yet each of us is unique. We accept and enjoy our commonalities and celebrate our differences." These Big Ideas are important to explore before we start investigating African American history in February, and so we created an art project for our bulletin board. The project is called "I Am Special - We Are ALL Special - We All Have Gifts to Share."
We started off by reading the book The Colors of Us, which illustrates the variety of amazing colors people can be. Then we read Whoever You Are and went on an imaginary trip around the world, exploring how people are different in many ways, and yet the same in other important aspects. We took our time exploring all the colors in the big boxes of Crayola crayons, and each child created a palette of the colors that matched his/her hair, eyes, and skin. We had fun with colors in the brown family, like sepia, mahogany, and chestnut. Yellow colors included goldenrod and dandelion. There were pacific blues, turquoise blues, and cadet blues. Skin tones ranged from peach and apricot to desert sand and ginger. At this point, students created paper people with their own special colors and then added tee-shirts with their favorite activities.
Today we did the hard part - or so I thought. The goal was to have each child identify one special character strength. We used the chart in our lunchroom as a reference. It lists the specific qualities of a mensch, which we talk about at our school-wide assemblies each Monday. I came up with 25 categories and jotted down the names of children I felt exemplified each one. When I introduced this to the students, I was amazed and touched by how easily students recognized their own character strengths. As soon as I mentioned a strength, someone would raise their hand and say "That's me". In the end, every student chose his/her own strength, sometimes after considering two or three, but more often on the first try.
The character strengths that children chose to put on their posters included the following 13 traits: Wisdom, Curiosity, Creativity, Courage, Confidence, Perseverance (not giving up), Kindness, Loyalty, Leadership, Calmness, Forgiveness, Thankfulness, and Joy. These incredible posters are on the bulletin board, and I hope you will stop by and admire them.

1st Grade Hebrew

Every Hebrew letter in kitah alef (first grade) has a special activity associated with it. The activities are fun and truly help students remember the letter and words associated with it.
Recently we learned letter "tet". Our activity was food related, which is always a favorite! Each student became a "tabah" (chef), and we made "tabah" (toast). While eating delicious toast that the children made, we read a story about a forgetful chef who always burnt his toast because he loved to watch TV! Students then wrote their own "Toast Story", and performed it as a short skit. What a yummy letter we learned!
