IMPORTANT MESSAGE!
From Rachel Zilbering, Principal
Show your Solidarity with The Silver Academy
Now and Double the Impact
At 10:11 am on Monday, February 27, the Harrisburg Jewish Community Center received a bomb threat. This threat forced the evacuation of our K-8 school, The Silver Academy. Thankfully, the evacuation was completed in less than 3 minutes, and the school building was cleared for return within 2 hours of the threat.

The Silver Academy's security team was integral in establishing the plan for our students' an d staff's speedy evacuation. With the current wave of anti-semitism in the US including 89 bomb threats called in to 72 Jewish institutions, our hired security guard is essential to our students' safety and parents' peace of mind. The Silver Academy's cost to employ security on site is over $300 per day.

We greatly appreciate all the warm words and gestures of support offered by the greater Harrisburg community in the face of the hatred behind these threats. In addition, we are grateful to the generous offer by a donor to
MATCH UP TO $25,000
for contributions made between now and  March 31, 2017, to defray our security costs. If you would like to contribute to the safety of our students and staff,  CLICK HERE TO DONATE

D'VAR TORAH

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Kindergarten Judaics
Morah Sarah (Mrs. Sally Jo Bronner)

The Hebrew month of Adar is upon us and Kindergarten is embracing it whole heatedly!  As we prepare for Purim, we are learning a song and dance about a clown ("letzan"), making groggers
("ra'ashanim") decorating masks, and creating other related items.
We enjoyed playing our own version of "guess who", where each student drew a picture of themselves in costume. Then class members were challenged to match each picture with its artist! Students are also creating their own individual "Megillot" to take home, and we will write one together as a whole-class project.

Students have taken to the stage in our classroom as they act out the Purim story. They are even making their own costumes! Kindergarten is also fulfilling the mitzvot of Purim. Morah Sarah is especially grateful that Morah Tamara helped us bake delicious Hamantaschen ("ozney Haman")!

After a busy month of Purim preparations we will move on to Passover, another exciting holiday for children.  We will be tackling a big project...making our very own Haggadot!  Another project will be making fresh  horseradish and Charotsets. Please let Morah Sarah know if you'd like to come in and help!

3rd Grade General Studies
Mrs. Jessica Wenzelberger

Our third grade writers have been working diligently to publish their own fairy tale adaptations. After reading several fairy tale adaptations, such as   The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, we analyzed the stories to find out what makes these adaptations work so well. Students discovered the adapted stories contained changes to the main characters, the character's motivations, and the events of the story. Next, the students set to work on adapting Little Red Riding Hood following our adaptation guidelines. Once published, we shared these amazing books in the classroom. You can see the creative books on display outside of our classroom!
