GOOD THINGS HAPPEN EVERY DAY AT
THE SILVER ACADEMY!
|
From Rachel Zilbering, Principal
If you were in the halls of The Silver Academy during the mornings this week, you would have noticed that the school was unusually quiet. This has been a different week for students, as grades 3-8 took part in Terra Nova testing. The Terra Nova testing includes Mathematics, Reading, Language, Science and Social Studies. Standardized testing is important to identify strengths and weaknesses in an objective manner and also to show academic change from year to year.
I am happy to report that testing went smoothly. All students were in attendance and on time, and the schedule ran like clockwork.
Additionally, the spring weather cooperated, and students enjoyed a well-deserved break outdoors after testing. Thank you to the teachers who proctored and were flexible with their time.
I hope that everyone has a good week and that your preparations for Pesach are going well.

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM
|
2nd Grade General Studies
Mrs. Brandy Hurley
In second grade we have immersed ourselves into the rain forest habitat. Our classroom has literally been turned into the rain forest, complete with a tree and vines! Students used their knowledge of plant and animal life to create representations of a tropical rain forest. Through research, each student became an experts on one animal from this habitat. As part of our studies, we discovered how important rain forests are and why they should be protected.
Middle School Talmud
Rabbi Moshe Yosef Gewirtz
A visitor walking by room 223 recently might have been puzzled by the discussion taking place inside the classroom. The students were enthusiastically discussing the kind of naps shepherds should be allowed to take during a long day out in the field with the flocks. They expressed amazement that shepherds were allowed to leave the sheep under minimal care for short breaks "in town", and that according to the Talmudic sage Raba, even professional shepherds could take these breaks, but only on a certain schedule. Students were gratified to learn that another Talmudic sage, Abaye, shared their incredulous opinion that Raba could allow paid shepherds to take these breaks.
Most importantly, the middle school students saw how principles derived from verses in the 3300 year old Torah text were applied to shepherds in the 1500 year old Gemara text through a process that they could employ today. They practiced objectivity as they identified with and then critically analyzed each of the opposing arguments in turn. They developed the sensitivity to detect whether a proof texts is supportive or hostile to a stated view. They employed intellectual acuity to appreciate the distinctions offered to defend a stated view from a threatening proof text.
The great Harvard medievalist Harry Austryn Wolfson described Talmudic study as "the application of the scientific method to the study of texts" because hypotheses are continually being formulated and either successfully defended or rejected. And when they are done, there is no need to wash lab equipment.
