GOOD THINGS HAPPEN EVERY DAY AT
THE SILVER ACADEMY!
From Rachel Zilbering, Principal
rzilbering@silveracademypa.org

Our students are in Israel!
The Silver Academy travelers hit the ground running as soon as their plane landed! They visited the Latrun, (outdoor tank museum) and Mt Hertzl, had their first taste of Israeli food at Machane Yehuda, did some shopping, and  saw a spectacular view of Jerusalem from the Haas promenade. Stay tuned for more pictures of this amazing journey!

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Kindergarten Judaics
Morah Sarah (Sally Jo Bronner)

Kindergarten has begun an exciting unit on Israel which will involve a variety of hands on experiences.  Earlier in the year, we "visited" the Dead Sea and put special mud on our feet.  This week we are learning to dance and sing with the Israeli flag for Yom Ha'atzmaut. Be sure to visit our bulletin board where you can see the student-created Israeli flags.

Students' mastery of Hebrew continues, as we learn to recognize, write and read more Hebrew letters and words. We recently enjoyed reading the book, "Yuvi's Candy Tree", by Lesley Simpson, about a young girl in Ethiopia who dreams of flying to Jerusalem. This book demonstrated how Jews come in many colors, and are from many places. Just like Yuvi,  we are going to travel to Israel in the month of May!  Thank you so much to Yonatan's mother, Ayelet Shanken, who will be our "madricha" (guide) on this journey! She will lead us through Israel to explore  Jerusalem and the Old City,  Tel Aviv,  Haifa, Ramat HaGolan and  Eilat.   Students will have passports in hand and get them stamped at each stop!  As we travel, w e will work together to  create a map of Israel and mark the cities we "visit" with icons that are significant for each city.   Our young travelers will also learn about various bodies of water in Israel, including the  Sea of Galilee, the Mediterranean, the Dead and Red Seas.

A trip abroad would not be complete without an introduction to the unique art of the area. During our trip, students will learn about the art of Agam and Michal Nagrin, both internationally known Israeli artists .

We are all excited to get on the plane!

4th and 5th Grade General Studies
Mrs. Jessica Wenzelberger

The fourth and fifth grades have recently finished a unit on poetry. Students learned about poetic elements, analyzed poems, then wrote their own poetry books. These young poets followed all the rules when writing haikus, limericks, diamantes, and clerihews; however, when writing free verse poems, they were able to write as creatively as possible. After all their poems were typed and illustrated, students bound the pages into a book. All throughout the week, the poets will be sharing their books with the class.
