The legislative session started Monday, but WHA already has a need for your urgent attention and quick action to help defend our industry.
SB 5513, will allow counties to raid 33% of the lodging tax, which is required to be spent on local tourism promotion, and divert it toward affordable housing. As currently written, the bill applies to Chelan County, but we believe there will likely be a request to expand the bill to more counties.
Year after year, we ask for your help to protect the lodging tax – a tax only on our industry – that benefits local tourism efforts. Our industry is still in recovery, and we must protect these funds to continue to support local hospitality businesses.

Vaccine Mandates, Businesses Urged to
Be Prepared to Comply This Week

The U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments on federal vaccine mandates last week, but the Washington Retail Association urges businesses with over 100 employees to be prepared to comply beginning this week.
WR does not recommend waiting until after the court hands down its decision to avoid potential OSHA fines.

American workers were less engaged in 2021, according to a new Gallup study. This is the first time the statistic has dipped in a decade, in the midst of the Great Resignation and the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers in particular felt disconnected from their work, feeling unsupported, unheard, and unprepared.
Gallup researchers, however, do offer up some strategies that leaders can implement to help employees feel excited and involved in the workplace

Kitsap County Commissioner Rob Gelder is hosting a Virtual Town Hall during the next meeting of the Kingston Community Advisory Council on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, from 6:30 to 8 pm.
The public will have the opportunity to learn more about local projects, priorities and other efforts underway in North Kitsap, as well as ask questions on topics or issues of concern.

Health Advisories Issued for Dyes Inlet and
Port Washington Narrows
|

Affected area: Dyes Inlet and Port Washington Narrows
Warning signs will be posted at public access points.
No-Contact Advisory: A no-contact advisory is in effect through Jan. 14.
During a no-contact advisory, the public is advised to avoid contact with water in the affected area. The Health District recommends against swimming, wading, or types of water recreation that could cause water to be swallowed or get into the mouth, nose or eyes. People should also avoid direct skin contact if possible and immediately wash with soap and clean water if they have exposure to the water.
Be aware that because of extreme high tides, pooled water near shorelines could also be contaminated.
Shellfish Harvesting Closure: A shellfish harvesting advisory is in effect until further notice.
The public is advised to not harvest shellfish in the affected area during this closure period. All existing shellfish advisories remain in effect. Go to https://doh.wa.gov/shellfishsafety for details.
A similar advisory was also issued through Jan. 14 for the Wing Point area on Bainbridge Island (east shoreline of Bainbridge Island from Hawley Cove to Yaquina Avenue).

Intermittent road closures on Bay Shore Drive NW and Washington Avenue NW for Sewer/Stormwater/Road improvement project.
Expect moderate delays on Towne Rd. NE at the intersection with Foster Rd. NE for PSE utility work. One lane alternating with flagger in place during work hours. Project is scheduled to be completed by Jan 29, 2022.
WSDOT Project Alert: Construction crews working on the SR3 Chico Creek fish barrier removal project. Temporary speed limit reduction to 45mph in both directions on SR3 along one-mile section for the duration of the project. Drive-Through COVID Testing Now Available
6 Days a Week in Kitsap
|

In response to increased demand for COVID-19 testing, the Kitsap Public Health District and the Kitsap County Emergency Operations Center have expanded the days of operation for the drive-through site at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Beginning Jan. 7, the fairgrounds site will be open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, per a KPHD news release. Testing at drive-through sites is now available Mondays through Saturdays. Locations and schedules are as follows:

Mondays: Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge Island, 11042 Sunrise Drive NE, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This site will also open on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19. The site will be closed Jan. 17 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tuesdays: Bremerton Harborside Parking Garage, 100 Washington Ave., 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays: Kitsap County Fairgrounds, 1200 NW Fairgrounds Road, East Bremerton, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays; 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

COVID-19 Vaccine & Testing Resources |

Kitsap County Health District is now posting a regularly updated list of COVID-19 vaccine providers in Kitsap County. This list can be found here.
With the new wave of cases due to the Omicron variant, testing availability and resources are being strained both locally and nationally. Testing appointments or at-home tests may be difficult to find. Please be patient as you seek a test and plan well in advance if you need a test to participate in activities such as travel. KPHD has updated our list of organizations providing COVID-19 testing in Kitsap County here.

Olympic College Asks for Local Employers
to Complete Needs-Assessment Survey

Olympic College is asking for your participation in a Comprehensive Local Needs Assessments (CLNA) – a requirement of any educational facility that receives federal funding through the Perkins V Act.
The objective of the CLNA is to ensure that high schools and colleges are offering the right Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs to fill the workforce needs in the area, as well as, to identify gaps and barriers to students in special populations and determine strategies and resources to close the gaps.

January is National Blood Donors Month |
|
As the COVID-19 pandemic stretches on, the American Red Cross is reporting that its nationwide blood supply is the lowest it's been in 10 years. At a time when hospitalizations are skyrocketing across the country, many locations are at record lows. Donations have slowed during the pandemic, many people are ill, and the Red Cross, like many businesses, are facing staffing shortages; coupled with winter weather across the nation, blood stores are rapidly in need of an infusion.
Silverdale's Bloodworks Northwest location has blood donation hours every day of the week except for Sunday and are encouraging those who are able to make a donation. For more information, or to schedule a donation, visit their website today.
