Simon Says #2 - Benjamin Franklin

Hello friend, and welcome back to Simon Says.

As I mentioned two weeks ago in SS#1, I’d love to hear feedback from my readers on how I can improve. Please email me at [email protected].

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a big fan of Benjamin Franklin.

Ben Franklin was, as I like to say, the father of the founding fathers.

He lived to 84 years old, spoke 6 languages, and excelled in multiple fields.

An accomplished businessman, writer, inventor, scientist, politician, and more.

A broke runaway at 17 years old, he was influencing colonial governors by age 20.

I’ve read a lot about Ben Franklin and all of his own books, and I’m currently reading another biography about him by HW Brands.

I decided to look through some old writings of his and pull out some good quotes.

The first list was long, but I was able to narrow it down slightly.

33 Benjamin Franklin quotes about money and business:

1) Wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoys it.

2) If you desire many things, many things will seem few.

3) Content makes poor men rich, Discontent rich men poor.

4) He does not possess wealth that allows it to possess him.

-- "Make your money don’t let it make you." - Wiz Khalifa

5) When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.

6) No man e’er was glorious, who was not laborious.

-- “Gotta have a worker in you but be all the way boss.” - Styles P

7) Diligence is the Mother of Good Luck.

8) Look before or you’ll find yourself behind.

-- Another Franklin quote I like- “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.”

9) The doors of wisdom are never shut.

10) Patience in the market is worth pounds in a year.

-- It’s not about timing the market, it’s about time in the market.

11) To succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions.

12) He who waits upon fortune is never sure of dinner.

13) Well done is better than well said.

- Many people online care about looking good- but are they really doing good?

14) If you would persuade, you must appeal to interest rather than intellect.

15) Approve not of him who commends all you say.

-- True friends don’t tell you what you want to hear, they tell you the truth.

16) Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do.

17) If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

18) You will find the key to success under the alarm clock.

-- I call it an opportunity clock- who wants to wake up to an alarm?

19) Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.

20) Would you live with ease, do what you should, and not what you please.

-- Need help getting your priorities straight? Try listening to Jordan Peterson.

21) You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again.

22) The way to wealth, if you desire it, is as plain as the way to market. It depends chiefly on two words, industry and frugality; that is, waste neither time nor money, but make the best use of both.

23) Industry, perseverance, and frugality make fortune yield.

24) Work as if you were to live a hundred years. Pray as if you were to die tomorrow.

-- “Prepared for the worst but still praying for the best.” - Lil Wayne

25) Lend money to an enemy, and thou will gain him, to a friend and thou will lose him.

26) Do good to your friends to keep them, to your enemies to win them.

27) Creditors have better memories than debtors.

28) Energy and persistence conquer all things.

-- Consistency beats intensity.

29) Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power.

30) Nothing is more fatal to health than an over care of it.

-- Can’t stay locked at home all day, need to take calculated risks sometimes.

31) Learn of the skillful; he that teaches himself, has a fool for his master.

-- This one I have a hard time with because I'm a big proponent of self-education. Just be careful with this one and make sure you're not attempting to teach yourself technical skills.

32) He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals.

-- Go and listen to Love Yourz by J Cole.

33) Who is wise? He that learns from every One.

Who is powerful? He that governs his Passions.

Who is rich? He that is content.

Who is that? Nobody
