We are pleased to announce the appointment of Simone Yearwood to the position of interim dean of the School of Arts and Humanities. Simone is well known to all at Queens College, having served as associate dean and chief librarian of the Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library since 2001. In those capacities, Simone represented the Library at all levels (campus, university, and national) and was involved with diversifying the collection. Her role included leadership, management, policy, budget, planning, and implementation responsibilities. She is participating in the development of a pilot anti-racism immersion program in academic libraries. The goal of the program is the creation of a national initiative to train academic library workers to be better able to effect organizational change to make their libraries more welcoming for BIPOC students, faculty, and staff.
A three-time Queens College alumna, Simone earned a BA in Sociology in 2004, a Master’s in Library Science in 2007, and a Master of Arts, Urban Affairs in 2009. Her research focuses on information literacy, cross-training of staff, patron-driven acquisitions, user experience, leadership, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues.
Simone is active with the New York Library Association (NYLA), having served on its executive board, and is the current chair of the Communications Committee. She teaches an introduction to librarianship course and a research methods course as an adjunct associate professor for the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College. Simone has also served as the chair of the Academic Senate.
As interim dean for the School of Arts and Humanities, Simone will work to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness while providing leadership in the areas of academics, planning and budget, and outreach. Simone can be reached at simone.yearwood@qc.cuny.edu.
